This morning, ICE attempted to arrest someone on Bayard Street stating that they had been involved in a hit-and-run situation. By law, ICE must present a judicial warrant in order to detain someone. When questioned repeatedly about whether or not they had a judicial warrant to take the person into custody, nothing was produced. During the course of all of this, advocates from Resistencia en Accion, stood in the gap to ensure the situation was handled legally and kept a watchful eye on the entire situation. During the time I was present, Council President Gonzalez, the Mayor, the Police Director and others were on scene. In the end, a judge ultimately denied ICE's request for a warrant to be issued, and they had to leave. While I am a strong believer in the law and its proper execution, I am wholeheartedly against abusing it regardless of who they are pursuing. We must continue to work together to ensure EVERYONE is treated fairly and humanely and that in cases such as this, people are properly educated about their rights. NO JUDICIAL WARRANT, NO ENTRY. Everyone, be safe, alert and vigilant. Most importantly, know your rights and that goes for all of us!
