Remember when we were conjecturing that this is what would happen to that apartment building in Chicago?

That there were dealings behind the scenes and it would end up with the ICE raid being a very convenient alternative to eviction?

Here are the receipts:

No matter what happens in the coming weeks, we are Chicago. We rose from the ashes. We never quit.&10;&10;We are the lake in the morning, the sun rising over the water, its reflection drawing a line straight to our shores.&10;&10;We are the Haymarket Martyrs, the Pullman strikers, always demanding better than what we've got.&10;&10;We are the words of Sandburg and Algren and Brooks and Wright.&10;&10;We are the 90s Bulls, making the impossible possible.&10;&10;We are the dipped Italian Beef. Messy, sure, but incredible.&10;&10;We are the humidity in the summer, the frostbitten cheeks in the winter.&10;&10;We are smoke-kissed rib tips.&10;&10;We are elotes on the street. We are pierogis in a pot.&10;&10;We are Curtis singing Hush now child.

Tonight of all nights Iโ€™m going to re-up my benediction for Chicago.

We are everything.

Some days I'm in awe of my students. That they, these brilliant, talented, creative beings trust me and think that I've got something worthwhile to say.
I work every day to live into that trust. It's part of smart keeps me working to learn constantly.

Everybody should read this. Gives you a really good idea of the types of questions trans people have to ask ourselves almost every day just to do normal things that others donโ€™t even need to think about.

Finally: AI cannot do your job, but an AI salesman can 100% convince your boss to fire you and replace you with an AI that can't do your job, and when the bubble bursts, the money-hemorrhaging "foundation models" will be shut off and we'll lose the AI that can't do your job, and you will be long gone, retrained or retired or "discouraged" and out of the labor market, and no one will do your job.
AI is the asbestos we are shoveling into the walls of our society and our descendants will be digging it out for generations:

Trump is asking us to start choosing groups we're willing to abandon, and the only way to make him stop is to be clear we're not fucking abandoning ANYONE.

Call your reps. Call your fucking reps. Especially in red states. Use the @5calls.org app, it's easy and free.

Opinion | Civility Is a Fantasy Calling for civility is a way of reminding the powerless that they exist at the will of those in power and should act accordingly.

Fantastic essay by Roxane Gay: Civility Is a Fantasy. โ€œCalling for civility is about exerting power. It is a way of reminding the powerless that they exist at the will of those in power and should act accordingly. It is a demand for control.โ€ [nytimes.com]

All this, also when censorship is on the rise, BIPOC and Queer work is being attacked, banned and erased, humanities programs are being shuttered.
And attacking is not like valid critique or social commentary.

You don't have to read things you don't like but you can read the room.

It's pretty wild to me that investigators have uncovered that anti-trans campaigns are largely funded by the fossil fuel industry, and that the presumed motivations are pretty directly to redirect the public conversation away from climate change... and that this isn't bigger news.

We can actually confirm this. An anonymous (verified) Stripe employee told me last month that Stripe does not permit *any* sale of adult content, regardless of whether it is delisted.

Stripe explained this to Itch in August, while Itch was continuously misleading their community (and harassing us).

The biggest hurdle to Trump's Medicaid work requirements: the war on disabled workers The White House is telling Medicaid users to get jobsโ€”while attacking everything that makes that possible.

Medicaid work requirements are just bad. But, as I wrote for @motherjones.com, thereโ€™s an extra level of vileness going on with them being implemented as more work-from-home jobs disappear.

I am begging people to start thinking critically when you hear rumors that queer and trans people are rapists and pedos and that their places of work are their hunting grounds. Actual rapist pedos are threatening us with violence. This is textbook. We gotta call it out! We can't be shy about this.

This feels like medicine I need. Talking about hope, about dreaming, that is backed by love, joy, grief, determination, and poetry. I don't know if I'll be able to take it all in over the next few days because I feel like I want to slow down enough for it to soak into my being.

I'm getting ready to unplug for a few days, & that means looking at my TBR pile to see what I'm going to read.

I picked up What it Takes To Heal by @prentishemphill.bsky.social emphill because of how much I've appreciated hearing them talk about moving through the world.

Amal El-Mohtar, The River Has Roots (2025) [Warning: this post contains spoilers, and is best read after youโ€™ve read the book!] Amal El-Mohtarโ€™s first solo novella is a work of fantasy, a fairy tale with supernatural beings and magic โ€ฆ

I'm so moved by Rob Maslen's long, deep reading of THE RIVER HAS ROOTS. Pleased to be read through Rosemary Jackson, who "famously described fantasy itself as a kind of engine driven by desire", & I love insights like "Every aspect of El-Mohtarโ€™s story looks two ways." Many thanks.

I hope you find some ease and gentleness in your journey, whatever that looks like. You are worth it.
