I don't see much point in getting spinny about changing kiddie books and passports because that is just ragebait for the sake of a signal to their voter base, when the real crisis affecting Māori is homelessness and has been passed between successive governments since Key with no real remedy

Even such obviously black-and-white distinctions as alive/dead or male/female turn out, on close examination, to be more like a continuous merging than a sharp discontinuity. Pork sausages from the butchers contain many live pig cells. With today's techniques you might even clone an adult pig from one. A person's brain can have ceased to function but their body with medical assistance, can keep going. There are at least a dozen different combinations of sex chromosomes in humans of which only XX represents the traditional female and XY the traditional male.
Oh look, 1999 Terry Pratchett says fuck J.K Rowling and every transphobe.

if you raise a young man to have empathy & respect for others & to treat people of all genders as his peers & equals he’ll probably be able handle the occasional person saying “men are shit”. who knows he might even agree with the sentiment after learning a little bit of history

Just now, RNZ reporter Ruth Hill referred to nurses winning a “sex based” pay equity claim against the government, when it’s referred to as “gender equity” everywhere except for in deeply transphobic circles.
I’m unsure why today’s strike was viewed as an appropriate place to make that statement.

We need to teach people the difference between being uncomfortable and being unsafe. Because the discomfort of the safest people is endangering the most vulnerable, all day every day.

Weird men are driving people out of politics
Their smear campaigns are ham-fisted and grotesque. They’re also working.
This is great, and I hope it spurs a broader conversation about how the impact of this behaviour shows up in every statistic from pay equity to DV, and informs a spectrum of violence that’s not isolated to a few “weird men” but is deeply embedded in our psyche - including our media and our politics.

The campaign to destroy Tory Whanau
And the media's role in the sexual harassment campaign
“So no, it turns out politicians won’t work together on the big issues. Not when the issue is: Should a brown woman be allowed to lead without being torn apart? Not when the issue is: Should we believe misogynist rumours, or challenge them?”
Stellar and vital commentary as always from Emily Writes.

Observation. Been writing all week with Parliament in the background. The volume and diversity of anger at/in Select Committees right now, not just RSB, is wild. Sure, it's an unpopular government, but it's also a sign the policy advisory system isn't working.

I’m just going to periodically re-post a variation of this even though no-one ever learns:
If you are boosting the bad takes, you guarantee the production of more bad takes
If you do this *knowing that you’re doing it* then the only possible conclusion is you *like the bad takes*

Close up of the artwork, featuring the nine stars of Matariki (the Pleiades), and the moon in a waning crescent. The top border are alternating gold and silver Xs in a purapura whetū (“star seeds”) pattern, the border on the left is a stepped gold, black, and sliver pattern called poutama (“stairway to heaven”)
Close up of the ornately carved bow of the waka, in gold and silver on a black background.
A collection of stars found in the top right corner of the artwork, all in silver on a black background. The largest star is Puanga (Rigel), the three smaller ones below it are Tuatoru (Orion’s Belt). Two triangles of stars are to the left of them, a larger of one five stars (forming the sails of Te Waka o Rangi) and a smaller triangle of three (the great fish net)
Close up of the ornately carved stern of the waka. Attached to it is a silver feather streamer, called a puhi-rere.
As Bluesky sort of reduces the quality of photos, here are some close ups!

An artwork in gold and silver on a black background. The image shows an ornately carved Māori waka (canoe) with two sails. Attached to the stern of the waka is a silver feather streamer. Above the waka are a collection of stars in various sizes, and the moon in a waning crescent, all done in typical Māori art styles. The border around the artwork has two types of borders. On the top and bottom are small Xs in gold and silver representing stars (in te reo Māori this pattern is called purapura whetū, meaning “star seeds”). On the bottom are stepped zigzags alternating in gold, silver, and black (this pattern is called poutama, or “stairway to heaven”)
Mānawatia a Matariki mā Puanga! Ngā mihi o te tau hou! Hail, Matariki and Puanga! Happy Māori New Year!
To celebrate the new lunar year I created this piece of Te Whānau o Matariki and Puanga, who both form part of the great constellation, Te Waka o Rangi.

Given the coalition government have agreed to pass (a version of) the Regulatory Standards Bill it seems to me to make more sense for submissions to focus on concrete recommendations to change aspects/clauses of the proposed Bill rather than just opposing it. Anyone seen a list or similar?!

I'm a dad bringing up a family on their own. I have leaned this: hobbies are dominated by men because women are just too busy. If men did their fair share they'd be too busy to meet up and argue over whatever bullshit passion they have.

Unpopular opinion maybe but hey NZ, we should *not* in fact make it illegal to record audio of someone without their consent. There are people in power up to no good for whom this would be Christmas.
We *should* however add audio to our existing laws about unconsented intimate recordings.

This concerns privacy, sure, but better to frame this behaviour as tech facilitated abuse or image based sexual abuse. This didn't occur in a vacuum, but in a context of thinking about women as sex objects to be consumed by men. Also, there's no "digital harm bill" ...
