An American Coot is a nearly all black waterfowl with a thick, white bill and white frontal shield on the forehead, and red eyes. Here it glides through deep blue, calm water with a nearly perfect reflection.

Powder down feathers, located on the breast and flanks, create a fine, waxy powder which conditions the feathers, enhances waterproofing, and aids in the removal of dirt and debris. Herons and Egrets rub their bills against these powder down tracts to collect the powder and then distribute it across their feathers during preening.
