Poster with the word VOTE in different colours arranged down the poster.
If you haven’t already
please VOTE.
(This only applies to the UK which is currently in the grip of Council Elections.)
(I’m not advocating that you vote for any specific party, that’s up to you, but I’m just keen on there being as large a turnout as possible.)
You’re saying that now…

AI, or the fallout from AI
AI isn’t being developed to help learning & teaching, it’s for business & the military. Education will be picking up the bits that it thinks can help.
Some educators see the Business benefits, some the Conflict benefits, not all will see pedagogic benefits
A5 #LTHEchat
Apart from loads a’money you mean?
Well, going back to my A1…
A magic BS detector that could sort out those doing things for the benefit of the students from those doing things for their benefit.
A4 #LTHEchat
Number of foreign students has fluctuated… many reasons: Covid, changes in government policy wrt visas etc etc
Whether this ever affected teaching or assessment policy I’m not sure…
A3 #LTHEchat
Retired and out of it all now…
But I cynically expect that going online will have enabled a fair amount of enshittification to take place.
It can be a transformative change, but there will always be a way to mess it up for people.
A2 #LTHEchat
For most HE in the last 5 years it’s being forced online (an unexpected benefit of Covid ?)…
For the OU in the last 25 years it was getting to grips with working online…
So many benefits for both groups in going online in teaching and in learning and, when handled well, in assessment

At that age (OK, 60 years ago) I remember avidly reading the historical fantasy novels by Henry Treece and Geoffrey Trease, 2 English authors who between them wrote a LOT of books, some still available on Amazon
Covered a lot of history… Vikings, Romans, Crusades, Romanian revolution
I loved them

An AI moderator that would sit within the VLE/chatroom and automatically do things like respond intelligently to student’s posts, keep discussions going, feed in new ideas, chivvy people to take part… also do Tests and Feedback and Marking (with tutor oversight obviously!)
A2 #LTHEchat
Would presume tools provided for use by students in their studies, ie the VLE if that still a thing, is worth knowing all about…
Tools for lesson development or research use would hope institution would provide (wishful thinking?) Investment…? As much as it takes to solve my problems.

So, so many…! But I was using back in the ‘70s. SNOBOL was one I loved.
More recently I was sorry when NUDIST died and was resurrected as NVivo.
Several others at that time: CONC for concatenation and text analysis sadly missed.
And SPSS just got SO big…
Black and white Lino print of the Coach House, a small residence with a central front door at ground level with a hay entrance above and a wide entrance for the coach on the right. A weathervane sits on the peak of the roof and trees boarder both sides of the house. Underneath the house is a legend that reads COACH HOUSE.
#inmotion
The coach has left the Coach House where it sleeps and is currently bowling down the High Street to the pub…

At school we were very influenced by the work and prints of Michael Rothenstein - if you can ink it you can print it!
Great sketch… you found the colours!

And How?
Super looking paper, so rich, heavy, thick and meaty…
What do you use for pulp? And colours? Or is that natural?
I'm going to try fallen leaves in the Autumn, hoping to get different textures and colours from different trees…
(Just in time for seasonal cards!)
A black and white wood panel print showing a five-bar farm gate between two gate posts flanked by hedgerows.
A black and white Lino print showing three big tree shapes growing from a verdant undergrowth.
Two naive black and white prints…

OK, #AI question…
These #LLM based GenAI apps are ‘trained’ on a huge amount of #data
But what data exactly?
Like all of the Gutenberg Project or Google Books…?
Sounds a bit WASP to me. And what about copyright?
Are these things trained on data that is mainly ‘western’?
Help please…
#LTHEchat
Listening to this late… I'm going to have nightmares
Assessment - Forget free will, the generative AI will have decided it all for you, all we need to do is press the button.
(PS - did you know all our student data has been given to the machine?)

Skim it…
As lots have said… some interesting exercises to loosen the mind and hand(s).
I guess why musicians still practice their scales and runs.
And occasionally ‘see’ or ‘hear’ something different (cf don’t draw the branches of the tree, draw the spaces between the branches).
