Anyway, all of that to say, yeah, have some damn faith in yourself! It can be fun and life-affirming to tease out who you are and what you can be, and to learn what all you can do for others when you've learned yourself.

And then what happens? All of these cultural institutions are eroded and eventually start to collapse, and I feel like dog shit, because on some fundamental level I believe that I do not have a hand in shaping my reality.

There is a broader context in which all of this is happening, sure, but we have say in what kinds of ideas reach us and how we respond to them. I did not accept this for a long time, and my life was palpably narrow as a result.

And I carry the process forward when I talk about both of those shows, and especially when I sit down to write and make my own work. It's a conversation. Maybe that conversation will reach far and wide, but it emerges from self-reflection—part of a larger process of accretion and pressure.

For years, I said something like "Evangelion fucked me up and Utena saved me"—and yeah, that almost describes an arc that I was on, that I am sure I'm still on, but it is also such a severe reduction of my experience of the world. I wasn't just part of the process, I initiated it! I sought it out!

God! This is so right. I heard and felt this when Austin made this exact case on AMCA around the boycott, but fuck, man, the world at large puts plenty of pressure on the notion that any given show or book "saved me" without him having to say it.

I'm not sure I can describe what happened in my heart when I saw this book's title. It's stupid, and the excerpt in the article isn't thrilling, but goddamn it, I'm about to buy a Stephen King book in hardback in the year 2026 😭
