I like 1/2/4, but 3 feels like it starts from the position of “AI is bad”, rather than being about doing your best work as the others are. I’ve seen AI slop at work, but I’ve also seen people do large quantities of high quality work.

Apple post processing artwork made by designers at other companies, Apple editing other companies logos, is a level of hubris that I did not think even Apple could achieve.

What’s the problem with that? It just doesn’t look good. It may not be an “AI” algorithm in the current use of the term, but it is an algorithm acting without taste and making everything look uniformly “meh”.

But AI slop? Well Apple has learnt from the iOS 7 flat design transition where it took most apps years to update their icons, so to protect the sanctity of the Home Screen, iOS applies processing to every app icon to make it looks as if it were made for liquid glass.

It looks fine in screenshots because it’s an image of a “real” thing, but when I use it my brain realises it isn’t real, it’s just an image. Skeuomorphic glass is better than the leather or wood effects in iOS 6, but very much the same category.

What do I mean? I kinda liked the screenshots of Liquid Glass before installing it, but having used it for a week or so now it just feels a little dated. The etch effect is reminiscent of the skeuomorphism days.

I think I’ve finally put my finger on what I don’t like about Apple’s Liquid Glass.

It’s a reversion to skeuomorphism, with just a hint of AI slop.

To get started and try out the features of Logseq, I'm building a knowledge graph for my notes on The Blue Prince. It's got a very interconnected lore that puzzle solving depends on, so I've been scribbling down unstructured notes, a graph would be so much easier to refer to.

After many false starts with Obsidian, I'm trying out Logseq to see if it matches my mental model more, and it's looking promising. I never liked how Obsidian required file management as well as naming and linking, seems like too many dimensions and decisions.

The US already felt a little worse than the UK when I visited last year. That it might be accelerating rather than trying to turn it around is sad.

The UK had a period of “austerity” after the global financial crisis, many consider it to have been an overreaction.

It’s stark, shocking, having moved to Australia, to see a country that did not go through that. Public services work. The environment is nicer to exist in. People have time to care.

Other than the redesign, it's clear that macOS has barely changed. UX flows are the same, and there are hints of old UI peeking through everywhere. I hope this isn't Apple's Vista, where half the OS gets left behind, to be forever more stuck in the XP era like happened with Windows.

Congrats to Apple for adding 3 new types of icon and increasing every border radius by 5px, ensuring that designers the world over can continue to do important work, rather boring things like business priorities, and that users can continue to enjoy dated looking banking apps that won't keep up.

Personally I’m here over Mastodon because ATProto is a more mature take on decentralisation, and I find the culture here more inclusive than Mastodon.

The interviews are not graded, I’m not in the hiring loop, and I give feedback throughout.

I will never understand people who use ChatGPT in a mock interview.

We need to make it socially unacceptable to reply to questions with “well I don’t know but I asked ChatGPT and this is what it said”.
