Academia gets its own Cass Review in the form of the Sullivan Review. Not in my name. TW I am posting the review in the next post. And doing a rant. This is really dreadful, worrying stuff, and overreaches massively.

GIRES is in urgent need, and they need you.

For decades, the Gender Identity Research & Education Society has supported the trans community with vital research, resources, and advocacy. Now, it’s at risk.

They’re trying to raise Β£10,000 to keep GIRES going. Please share this and if you can donate.

🧡 The right wing politico-media, as well as extremists - so called β€˜Gender Critical’ - literally laugh at the idea that suicide & suicidal ideation exists amongst trans+ ppl. It’s disturbingly frequent as you can see here in devastating replies. Trans+ ppl just want to live without persecution. [1]

Yes. Several who have attempted and died by suicide.

Transphobia experienced was one of - if not the main - factor.

The Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention and Human Security would like to bring attention to and condemn recent judicial and governmental developments in the United Kingdom, which attempt to harm transgender and intersex people in the UK by stripping them of privacy and segregating them as β€˜others.’ The Lemkin Institute believes these moves are part of a broader process of erasure. It is not only government action but also the media narrative that has fuelled hostility to and debate about the humanity of trans and intersex people while ignoring their voices. We see evidence of genocidal intent and actions targeting these communities.

In April this year, the United Kingdom’s Supreme Court (UKSC) delivered a judgment declaring that, for the purposes of the Equality Act (2010), β€œsex” refers to β€œbiological sex,” which it did not define clearly. The Equality Act (2010) provides protection against discrimination on a variety of grounds in public spaces. This ruling at the UK’s highest court means that individuals are now protected from discrimination on the basis of their assigned at birth sex, regardless of how that corresponds to their gender identity, lived gender, or sex characteristics. The decision is the result of a court challenge brought by the gender critical group For Women Scotland, which is financially backed by author J.K. Rowling and characterises itself as β€œfeminist.”

To Women & Equalities Committee
We, the undersigned, write to express serious and urgent concerns about the actions of the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) and the apparent unwillingness of the Women and Equalities Committee (WEC) to investigate them.

It is becoming increasingly clear that the EHRC is no longer operating as an impartial human rights body. Over the past several years, its leadership has shifted in a direction that appears ideologically driven, hostile to trans equality, and closely aligned with lobbying groups who advocate for the removal of legal protections for transgender people. These groups - including Sex Matters, Policy Exchange, and the LGB Alliance - have played a significant role in reshaping public discourse and influencing legal interpretations of the Equality Act 2010.

We are calling on the Women and Equalities Committee to launch an immediate and transparent inquiry into:

- The EHRC’s internal decision-making processes regarding the definition of β€œsex” under the Equality Act 2010;

- All communications, meetings, and correspondence between the EHRC and external lobbying organisations from 2020 to the present;

- The EHRC’s advice to government departments, ministers, and the courtsβ€”especially its role in shaping the outcome of For Women Scotland v The Lord Advocate [2024] UKSC 59.

As transgender people and allies, we are gravely concerned that this advice, and the EHRC’s developing policy stance have been influenced not by human rights or evidence, but by ideological lobbying and political convenience. We must understand who the EHRC has been speaking to, what was said, and why these decisions were made. Anything less is a dereliction of democratic oversight.

Yeah. Doesn't help that there isn't much clarity on this, and some digital ethnographies I've read barely grapple with ethical considerations.
