My wife's even more generous theory is that the scene means the kid is saying this ridiculous thing, which J Lo's character knows is ridiculous but humors him about.
I always assumed that what he meant was that this was the first edition of some particular translation, like a first edition Lattimore or a first edition Graves. That has to be what he meant, right?
