Traditionally, “ally” refers to cisgender, straight people who support LGBTQ+ rights. But allyship is a verb, not a noun — it’s about what you DO, not who you are.

President Trump’s executive order attacking and forcibly removing transgender service members is bringing back some of the worst memories of the days of DADT, making it clear that the fight for LGBTQ+ equality in the armed forces is far from over.

It was not until 2016 that President Obama lifted the ban on transgender servicemembers serving openly.

🎖️Unfortunately, instead of moving ahead in our country’s journey to full inclusion, we’re seeing a return to the worst days of discrimination.

Through the repeal of this policy, those who were previously discharged for their LGB status were able to retroactively correct their service records or re-enroll, and new LGB recruits knew they could be their fullest selves if they chose to serve.

🎖️On this day in 2011, Congress officially repealed “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” — the 1994 policy that allowed LGB individuals to serve in the United States armed forces … as long as they stayed in the closet.

Tomorrow, we’ll say goodbye to LGBTQ+ Pride Month. 😢It’s always a bittersweet day, but this year, with so much rising hate, it’s been particularly special to spend so much time in connection, community, and celebration.

We’re proud to be part of this community, to fight for this community, and to show up every day as we work together toward justice, equality, and liberation for all. 🩷🏳️‍🌈⚖️🏳️‍⚧️
