always going to think of That One Pitchfork Piece about John Coltrane when I see things like this.

Having it go into effect at the start of a school year instead of summer is a special kind of malevolence.

seeing a lot of people just assuming that Indycar is all in on this when they're as mad at the feds as the Kincade estate was.

I don't generally throw the word "blasphemy" around but.

We're also going to see a lot less smaller grocery stores and corner stores if the powers that be have their way because about 90% of them where I live are owned by recent immigrants (the Nepalis have picked up the baton from the Arab folks who used to own them where I live).

My other thing that I get grumpy about is people who don't have a Whole Foods in their neighborhood saying it's a "food desert" when it's just that they don't like what their perfectly adequate grocery store has and don't even look to see what the ethnic markets have cheaper.

When there were no supermarkets and shopping centers, sure, you could have a good selection, but food systems have changed so much in the last hundred years, and it's not like corner stores aren't "legal" in places, they're everywhere.

Some of my lefty friends get mad at me for not being sufficiently excited about west and central African countries "throwing off the chains of imperialism" and really don't want to hear that Russian "help" is just more of the resource-hungry same.

The overhead of selling fresh produce in a smaller place at an affordable price in a walkable but ungentrified neighborhood when people have been acclimated their whole lives to drive to a shopping center means that stores like that don't always stick around or have to reconfigure themselves.

My dad was a bread truck driver who delivered to a few big box grocery stores and a lot of corner stores in the more down and out neighborhoods and would talk a lot about the economics of trying to figure out how much to order and what to stock.

One of my friends has a framed photo of Paul Byrd as part of his good luck sports shrine next to some good luck candles from the Mexican grocery store and a pair of autographed Larry Nance basketball shoes his mom won in a raffle at work.

that relationship that isn't quite a friendship but it's mostly "we both have beef with the same person and vent about it."

a Lebanese friend whose dad owned one in Detroit told me they tried to do fresh vegetables but it ended up being too expensive because things like that went bad when they weren't bought so that's why they ended up just selling things that were reliably shelf stable but also this meant not as healthy

I get the intent here, which I agree with, but I have a feeling this lady's never lived in a food desert where there are plenty of corner stores but they almost never have fresh produce.

I read things like this and feel really thankful that I grew up working-class and unambitious in the rust belt and went to a state school where Greek life was a thing but you didn't really have to deal with it at all.

it's like when people post those obviously fake news stories and then there's the responses of "of course it's real" or "so what if it was fake"

Since we all deserve a bit of hope & joy, I'd like to remind you about Harriet Powers, formerly enslaved woman who created remarkable Bible quilts in 19th century. If you look closely you'll see she added quilted elements to her apron, which I take as a kind of sartorial assertion: "I am an artist"

there's so much cool real stuff out there that's old and cool real stuff that takes old sounds and makes new music with them and I truly don't understand having to make completely fake stuff.

I left my back door open and unlocked in June 2020 when the protests were happening and I went over to the boyfriend's because the helicopters were driving me crazy and I forgot to lock up. Came home the next day and no one had bothered with it at all.

ended up in the DMs with a college friend of my sister's who moved out to Minneapolis to go to John Piper's church &ended up on a similar "I can't be here anymore" deconstruction exvie path into the world of bleeding-heart RCs & it's something how we all got burned out on what doesn't work anymore.

This is awful of Home Depot & Lowe's, who absolutely know that ICE already shows up to arrest migrants at their stores.

(Heard that directly from a federal agent who was on a multi-agency stakeout w/ICE agents who got bored after an hour & said, "Fuck it, let's go round up migrants at Home Depot.")

I'm generally leery of people who make prayer a big public thing and I feel like Jesus had some things to say about that too.

I do tell people I know that I will pray about something for them but then I do it privately so it doesn't make it weird.

Most of the Palestinians have moved out to Westlake & North Olmsted (my neighborhood's more Yemeni, Afghan & Syrian now) and there's some coffeeshops and places out there I still need to check out that are like the only ones in the area open after 7pm.
