We felt that just writing "Cheerleader outfits..." would be stiff for the scene, so we worked from Michi's character voice and her personality to determine what she might say in a similar situation in English.

Sometimes we make adjustments to capture the spirit and intention of the text--like here. Michi's reaction needs to be funny + express dawning horror.

JP: ここならではの景色があるかもしれない (LIT: Perhaps there will be unique scenery here.)

JP uses the "scenery" word very differently from English. It can literally mean landscape/scenery, but it can also mean the sort of things you experience in a place. Here was the latter.

It's mainly used to express admiration/longing toward someone's success, happiness, etc. So, I asked myself, how are they sparkling? Why does she mention it? For me, the answer was that reading this manga showed her what "normal" looks like, and how wonderful it could be.

Some translation thoughts on recent Tsumiki chapters.

JP: こんなにキラキラしてるもの (LIT: After all, they are sparkling this much.)

キラキラ (kirakira / sparkling) has a really wide use case in Japanese, so translating it is always a challenge.

(2) a rougher-language modifier to emphasize the previous statement
(3) big strategy/operation.
(4) her usual "ojousama" tone

The english sound effect is in an area with more dense line art, so it has an uneven outline made of the screen tone to keep the letters legible. Those outlines keep the tone contiguous with the art. White scraping is also visible.

There's a new English release of Mushishi, lettered by Phil Christie (@kernedout.bsky.social). I adore how Urushibara-sensei utilizes texture in her art, and how the sound effects inherit that texture. Phil does an amazing job replicating that with subtitled SFX. Notes in alt text!

Here's to 2026!! Hoping for more projects, more genres, more everything!!!!! (One of those goals has already come true, but I will gladly take more of the same, yes!!!)

My 1st full year of creative translation! It's hard to believe it's only been 1.5 years since I started freelancing full time. It honestly feels like a decade (lmao).
