Just for fun, here's the word in Mother 2
I think I recall it in Mother 3 too

Those are good ones, cool!

I guess from that, certain swear words work the same like s*it, also I guess if something "bombs" it's bad but it's good if it is THE "bomb"

"nikui" can mean "hateful / detestable" OR it can mean "amazing / fantastic / lovely"

"nikui" can mean "hateful / detestable" OR it can mean "amazing / fantastic / lovely"

We have stuff like this in English, like the word "bad", but I'm curious to know what other examples in English there are + what other examples there are in other languages

Let me know!

While comparing 2 fan translations + the SNES translation of FFIV, I use a very imprecise and informal scoring method to keep track of things. as of Day 1, the old J2E patch has scored better than the SNES translation and the more modern Namingway fan translation, but this is largely because Namingway uses FF2US as the base ROM, and the FF2US ROM has major script storage space limitations

(PS1, GBA, PSP, etc. aren't part of this comparison series but I might do them someday too, I just gotta learn how to program those systems eventually)

OK, after Day 1's long stream the current score has the J2E translation pulling slightly ahead of SNES & Namingway translations

The biggest issue seems to simply be the amount of cut content (due to space limits) from the SNES release, and since Namingway is built from the FF2US ROM, it follows

Which translation? I'm unsure what you're referring to

Maybe someone like @frankcifaldi.bsky.social or @chriskohler.net can help me remember - one of the cancelled attempts to port the game to Windows was supposedly underway but was then cancelled around the time the 1998 RPGe patch leaked

The PS1 version was indeed not long after the fan translation, but prior to the PS1 version there were multiple attempts to release it in English, but they didn't go anywhere

I'd link archive.org stuff but it seems down at the moment

Last night we got this weird bug to happen with #NinjaGaiden, I wonder if it's a known glitch that can be used for some neat purpose

(also, the audio wasn't very good last night so today's FFIV stream might be janky-sounding)

I'm gonna test it out tomorrow for my Ninja Gaiden Super Bowl
Then, if it all works out, we'll start the FFIV stuff the next day or so

image of said puzzle, which is a scene from earthbound/mother that features the in-game sprite of the character poo and a ghostly image floating above him as he meditates. these two figures are very small. the rest of the puzzle is made up of 1000 pieces that are pitch black.

a slightly creepier makeshift shrine with a mannequin-like face or mask sitting on top of earthbound packaging, the cartridge sitting in front of it. to the right is what looks like a red jewel case for mother 1+2 (soundtrack?). to the left is something blue and what look like troll dolls with the bright ffrizzy hair. there is also what looks like a mannequin arm protruding and reaching out from behind the earthbound packaging. a larger green vampire(?) face is behind the mannequin face.

The fan translation was designed to make the game accessible to western fans in the absence of an official translation. It was meant as a stopgap measure, not as a "superior" substitute. Now that there is an official translation, the fan translation is no longer needed outside of historical interest. Yes, it played an important role in the western fanbase for many years, but that time is over now. It did its job.

This viewpoint isn't just mine either. The people behind fan translations in general consistently express their support for an official release in place of their own work. Two other Ace Attorney games (T&T and GAA2) had partially-released fan translations when official translations were announced. Both fan projects ceased production when it was clear that they would no longer be necessary.

I have the utmost respect for all the hard work that the fan translation team put into making AAI2 accessible to western fans. But their work has been rendered obsolete, and I'm sure they are pleased that this is the case. via https://www.reddit.com/r/AceAttorney/comments/1psr7ad/comment/nvcatc2/

Ace Attorney fans did their own stopgap translation for A.A. Investigations 2 because an official release seemed impossible at the time. 10 years later it happened & fans respect both versions

Someday, I hope Mother fans will think the same of an official translation of Mother 3 vs. our own stopgap

Yeah, I worked on the series for quite many years in different ways, I did some of the start of S2 so the new translator could follow my lead, I also did some work on the goofy chibi series, and the various theatrical releases including the live action movies, lots of other little things too
