Some old advice about starting big projects (game translation projects in my case, but a lot of it is probably universal)

Looking through my old Wanderbar dev folders, I REALLY want to continue developing/streaming this stuff sometime
Right now I'm especially interested in doing a comparison of Working Designs' Lunar games for Sega CD someday
(for reference: legendsoflocalization.com/research/wan... ) #emulation
Wow, that's great! I'm glad it helped ๐

You encounter the Sweltering Snowman.
Posted for no reason in particular.

Back in the day when we made this, I added a secret pixel in the corner somewhere as a "watermark" to prove it was fake and by us
Or at least that's what I vaguely recall
The Choctaw word for "shoot / fire / emit" is super-close to Chinese (Southern Min) & Japanese - hear it for yourself!

Chicago is mostly a huge tower dungeon
05.09.2025 22:58 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0While studying Choctaw last year, I decided to revisit this comedic & stereotype-heavy JRPG about Native Americans
Unfortunately, this game remains Japanese-only after all these decades

This is all so great, I need to learn more about the gaming culture of each region from the era now, I'll need to invent a new type of university where I can take such courses

04.09.2025 23:57 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Oh man, I forgot about the Finger ad for EB, what a weird set of ads they ALL were
Makes me wonder what ad ideas DIDN'T make the final cut
What the heck, that feels so non-Zelda in terms of vibe too

What are some other crazy game marketing quotes?

02.09.2025 01:23 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I'm not sure, but I've asked Fangamer in the recent past to post digital versions of it and other "secondary" books that I've written, in order to avoid this exact situation
I'll continue to ask, but if you could ask Fangamer too that might help
(There are no actual fighting mechanics in this game though, because that's the hard part - I mostly just wanted to see how things would look/feel)
29.08.2025 23:36 โ ๐ 4 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Years ago I made a bare-bones "EarthBound with Smash Bros.-style battles" game in a day or two - mostly to get it out of my system & to teach me basic Unity animation #gamedev #earthbound #smashbros
I don't intend to revisit it but here it is if you want to try it! tomatogame.itch.io/fartbound
If we check their hack maybe it'll have the secret ingredient we needed all along
I wonder what their Mr. Saturn text looks like too
whoaaa, that's gonna open up a lot of new potential for things in the future
also I saw that a Chinese team translated Mother 2 (M1+2 gba version) into Chinese thanks to your own English hacking, which is really cool to see and hear
now to remake mother 3 in mother 1's engine
Thanks, I've been trying to work on it for a bit now, these darn technical problems!

Witnessing how a massive epic gets translated in different ways across the lifetime of the original work is a blessing & will be immensely helpful for analyzing how other historic epics have transformed over time too
Who knows, maybe those old Babylonian epics were 4Kids-ified early on too๐ญ
I've been looking forward to the conclusion for a long time now & am glad to hear it's getting there
As a translator, I'm super excited to see how the patchwork of "chapter by chapter" concurrent translations eventually gets replaced by a single, uniform translation when the series is over
Upon further thought, I wound up making my own Poneglyph last year, better watch out for that Buster Call

We're watching One Piece on Crunchyroll via Amazon Video. But I'm sad & disappointed that the Japanese audio subtitles have SO many timing issues not present on the DVDs, and at some point Crunchyroll just uses the English dub subtitles instead. There is clearly so much more room for improvement ๐
18.08.2025 19:20 โ ๐ 6 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I recently started watching One Piece with my wife, starting from the beginning, it's been fun revisiting the series and sharing memories I have from helping to officially translate it around 18 years ago

I've always wondered too, but any time I look I can never really find much
My gut feeling is that it might've come from a sudden common source in Japanese sci-fi or other entertainment, it faintly reminds me of how the word "mainframe" was suddenly used a lot in English stuff in the 80s/90s
I forgot about this, I wonder if it was the same in Japanese

Yuck, YouTube videos don't embed well in bluesky I guess, so here's non-YouTube, let's see how it embeds now
