Poland 🇵🇱 new president, Karol Nawrocki, was sworn in yesterday. His inaugural address was a scathing attack on the government, foretelling the political struggle in the next 2+ years until the general election in 2027 (if the current parliament lasts). Ever more interesting times ahead.

After nearly eight hours of debate (which wasn't really a debate, but ok), Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk won the confidence vote he called after his candidate lost presidential election on June 1.

243 votes for, 210 against, no abstentions.

In writing, yes. But in speech it’s really not easy - the dissonance being strong because of the conviction it should be easy. Closest to Polish (again, in speaking terms) is Belarusian imo.

Then there's turnout - as for the 1st round of presidential elections, it was big. But it also was less than in the 2023 general election. If the run-off turnout's bigger than yesterday, who will win? Beats me.

All told, RT and his possible allies won some 1mn votes less than Nawrocki and the far right. Surely, to quote @benstanley.eu, electorates ain't Lego blocks that you can simply stack on one another. But in their mass, voters do tend to have preferences. Who those other voters will pick now is key.

I keep forgetting I'm here :-) Anyway, yday's presidential vote put poll favorite Rafał Trzaskowski in extremely precarious position ahead of the run-off on June 1. RT only leads rival populist Karol Nawrocki by 360,000 votes. V strong result by the far right hints (even if only just) at Nawrocki.

Poland said last night it was sure last year's Warsaw mall fire was a Russian job. This morning, Polish foreign minister said he's shutting down the Russian consulate in Kraków.

Watching the event commemorating the 80th anniversary of the liberation of #Auschwitz, I remembered how a similar event 20 years ago actually featured a speech from Vladimir Putin, who, unfazed by the circumstances, talked about how he's fighting (Chechen) terrorists.

This time around it somehow feels for real that they're unlikely to screw it up the way they did in 2015 against Duda.

Surely PiS today ain't the PiS from 2015 (a two-term govt party versus long-time opposition, respectively). The liberal camp and Rafał Trzaskowski say they won't give in to complacency this time. It will be a v intense campaign, expect candidates to jump out of your fridge, as we say in Poland.

Poland's PiS once again fielding a relative nobody for a president. They did that with Duda in 2015 and, surprise, surprise, Duda won, despite trailing so heavily in the polls at some point that media began speculating he might not even make it to the run-off vote.

The notification on my phone only showe your post until "looming..." and it had me thinking you're suggesting it's Karol's presidency - which is not what I'm saying in the piece.

That said - who knows where we're going to be in April ;-)

Surely 2024 ain't 2015 but back then at some point, an important point of the media coverage of the presidential race was whether Bronisław Komorowski would sweep it in the first round already. Duda was largely a laughing stock.
