Journalists theoretically waiting in line a few moments ago for Mark Rutte's press conference at the NATO summit, but in fact for Donald Trump's that is expected afterwards

Another fascinating week in Poland.

I travelled 2,000 km+ over both rounds, conducted dozens of interviews in places where media - even less foreign - rarely ever get to, wrote 12 stories, edited five live blogs, and led the website on two election nights.

Thank you. @theguardian.com

No - but Poland is well advanced in talks with the UK about its own treaty, expected to be signed in the coming months (or so claim Polish politicians).

As itโ€™s a secret ballot, we justโ€ฆ donโ€™t know. But heโ€™ll certainly be assured that itโ€™s close to max, and not say 311 or 317 โ€ฆNot sure about proxies/pairing in the German parliament to be fair; will look into this out of interest. Thanks!

Some much needed clarification on Tusks announcements yday. Never cease to be amazed on how superficial the reporting on especially Eastern Europe is in the British press.

SoMe accounts, particularly in English, are run by junior (or v junior) officials at the bottom of the decision/info chain. Someone tweeted this quote among many others, out of context, without thinking twice and before they realised what happened it was too late.

It is official, but think youโ€™re wrong thinking thereโ€™s any subliminal steer/guidance there. This govt doesnโ€™t even have a spox (!), itโ€™s essentially all unfiltered Tusk.

He meant control of it, and if/how Poland would have influence over when/how they are used - not physical possession.

Sure for a twitter/x/bluesky storm but proper โ€œlegacyโ€ media should have checked it properly before running

07.03.2025 21:18 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 6    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Real - but itโ€™s tweeted out of context by someone who didnโ€™t realise how it made it sound.

07.03.2025 21:17 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 8    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

No, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk did not say that Poland seeks access to nuclear weapons.

A good explainer below โคต๏ธ

07.03.2025 19:34 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 19    ๐Ÿ” 8    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

And yet, thatโ€™s what you are reading in your feeds, because Poland is so poorly covered, often with people who donโ€™t know the context or speak the language, but just take a DeepL translation and come up with any random stuff to get engagement in this frenzied environment.

Depressing.

07.03.2025 19:29 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 137    ๐Ÿ” 11    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 3    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

And then the best thing about frenzied reports about Polandโ€™s โ€œplansโ€ to โ€œput in place system of compulsory military training for all adult menโ€ is that Tusk literally said it wouldnโ€™t be compulsory.

And that he would have said conscription if thatโ€™s what he meant.

But he didnโ€™t.
