Orkneyβs reputation for world-class, hand-dived scallops must not be sacrificed for short-term gain. Off the west coast, dredging like this has been going on for years and has made it extremely challenging for sustainable fishing there. The Scottish Government must listen to coastal communities.
24.10.2025 09:03 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Divers in Orkney have told me their seabed is being destroyed. Scallop dredging is turning vibrant marine habitats into lifeless deserts.
I have called for an urgent ban on scallop dredging in Orkney waters.

It was great to see so many members at conference.
It was a rich discussion on Land Reform and what we can do to move it at pace.
Nature Friendly Farming was a central discussion highlighting the need to have a balanced approach that combines food production while supporting nature to regenerate
The mass escape of fish from a #Mowi #salmon farm in the Highlands underlines the need for Scotland to halt expansion of existing and new salmon farms, says #ScottishGreen MSP Ariane Burgess @ariane-burgess.bsky.social

Thousands of farmed fish escaping is not only polluting our seas, but it is directly increasing the risk of extinction to this iconic wild species.
If we had stronger regulations and higher environmental standards, then we could reduce the damage being done.

If this Government genuinely feared wildfires, they would be taking bold action to tackle the climate crisis head-on. That means rewetting peatlands, rewilding and reforesting landscapes to retain water, and accelerating the reintroduction of beavers and apex predators.
The devastating wildfires in Dava and Carrbridge happened under the current regime. We took detailed evidence during scrutiny of the Wildlife Management and Muirburn (Scotland) Act. There is very little credible evidence to support the claim that muirburn helps prevent wildfires.

π± Scotlandβs future depends on how we grow our food.
Iβm calling on the Scottish Government to back a 10-year program of funding so farmers can gain the skills and support they need to farm regeneratively - protecting nature, tackling the climate crisis, and providing healthy local food for all.

Every time thereβs an escape, our fragile marine ecosystems are damaged.
Other countries treat escapes like this as the serious environmental incidents they are, issuing immediate fines and enforcing strict standards. Here in Scotland, ministers say nothing will change until 2027 or 2028.
Another mass salmon escape - 75,000 fish lost from Mowiβs Loch Linnhe site during Storm Amy. This is yet another reminder that Scotlandβs salmon farming industry is completely out of control
