I'm a little afraid since I recently learned that people who I thought were friends are planning to vote FvD.

They are no longer friends.

a church and a parking lot

One of these places is considered a holy ground & untouchable that must be protected at all costs and only discussed with the utmost reverence - the other is a church.

Putting aside the slop, I'm not surprised that this concept was approved by a NY-area suburbanite, especially one of Cuomo's age.

This is their image of the city.

A lot of people thought it was weird to leave cars in the street overnight: many cities in the past banned such parking entirely. Sadly, most of those bans fell away by the 1950s, and now few remember that it was once widely considered 'weird' to store cars on street overnight.

The fact that people are allowed to store their cars in the street is really weird - after all, a car is an individual's own private property and their responsibility. I can't think of a single other item you can store in public in this way.

In Dutch and Polish, at least, the word used for what Americans would call a 'van' is often 'bus' or a variation thereof. πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«

After an entire family of four was killed by a motorist, a proposal to redesign the intersection was watered down to signs and paint that drivers ignore, and someone called in a death threat against a legislative aide for doing even that much.

I prefer shared bikes personally, but this new policy is a very windshield perspective type of decision. Prague is rather car centric in my view, and this is not addressing that problem, it's ignoring it.

The proliferation of bus traffic signal priority in the Netherlands, yes more priority at signals than cyclists get, says otherwise.

The infra being good is one thing. However, you are right that NL bus operators are almost as dumb as the English the way they do fares. 🀨

Britain is a bad example. Apart from guns, they are tragically trying to Americanise themselves. Most new developments are hideous car-dependent SUV-filled cul-de-sac monstrosities, public transport outside London is mostly a cruel joke, propaganda in 'news' tabloids drives public policy. Bonkers.

I'm a fan of front and rear door boarding, shame that most airports don't have double jetways so this has to be done via steps.

13.10.2025 22:47 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Well as you can see it's not working well in this everyday situation, and front door only is an accessibility nightmare in general. Pushing through a narrow corridor on a crowded bus when the system could easily allow me quick access to the rear seats. Even worse for families, etc.

13.10.2025 12:53 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I also have to say that I'm not thrilled to share a road with Dutch bus drivers, they tend to be very aggressive. Maybe Utrecht ones especially. Even if you are riding in a cycle lane. One time, I was nearly crushed by a Utrecht bendy bus driver who overtook me and cut me off, along the Singel.

13.10.2025 12:00 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

The rear part of a bendy bus does track much differently than a tram, it drags across in a way that a vehicle on rails simply does not do.

Not that I'm so thrilled about the way double decker bus drivers behave. I recall TfL has one of the worse safety records amongst peer cities/agencies.

It's almost impossible to be stupider than British bus company management, but they give it a go. Why? My guess: Dutch are infamously miserly. But they are also famously practical and direct. Thus official policy is 'front door boarding' but in practice, most just want to crack on & not waste time.

An already late bus with 4 doors being delayed further by a big crowd waiting for front door only boarding, at Eindhoven airport station.

An already late bus with 4 doors being delayed further by a big crowd waiting for front door only boarding, at Eindhoven airport station.

They don't in theory. NL bus operators are almost as stupid as UK. Although the equipment is technically set up for all door boarding, the bus managers try to force front door boarding. However, most bus drivers don't enforce this nonsense. But not all.
