No, Defensive Walking Isn't The Solution For Road Deaths - Jalopnik
It's victim-blaming, it's bull, and it's not the solution we need.
“In 2023, cars and their drivers killed 8,820 American pedestrians and bicyclists — 7,314 pedestrians and 1,166 cyclists. They injured another 136,281, an increase of over 5,300 injuries from 2022.”
Put the responsibility where it belongs.

Allan government targets car parking rules in bid to build more homes
The Victorian government vows to overhaul "outdated" car parking requirements for new residential developments in areas that are well-serviced by public transport.
"It's estimated in the inner city something like 40 per cent of the current car parking spaces aren't being used"
In Perth, for multiple dwellings, that figure is a solid 30%+. It's ridiculous to still hear "but we need those spaces" in development project meetings.

In Perth, free transit in Central Perth (on buses and trains) is funded through an annual tax on all non-residential parking bays. Its a strategic solution that helps suppress vehicle movements to the busiest part of the city and increases public transit use / exposure.

Gold Coast urged to curb car dependence after light rail loss
With the population heading toward 1 million, the Gold Coast is being urged to overhaul its transport system or risk becoming defined by traffic.
Nothing in this is unfamiliar to every other major Australian urban area. A systemic combination of financial, planning / development, and strategic / political biases in how our urban areas evolve to prioritise commercial gain has led us to this.

Ah, that would be why so many people got on at Bayswater! That aside, great to see PT carrying the bulk of the movements to and from the game.

To save the CBD, stop calling it the CBD
To succeed in a post-Covid world, city centres need to be more than 'central business districts'.
Joel McManus is 100% bang on here.👏
"But when we use terms like “CBD”, we ingrain the idea that city centres exist merely for businesses. People become an afterthought in a concrete world of functional efficiency. And when people suffer, so do businesses".

Undersupplied WA Reveals Rail Precinct Planning Reforms
The West has taken a leaf from NSW’s playbook as it works to unlock more homes faster in its surging Perth market…
Fair to point out that a number of these station precincts have had increased height allowances and design guidelines for density controls over them for a number of years. Also fair to point out that some of them haven't.

4-panel vertical comic. (1) 100 Years Ago [two people standing next to bicycle with small car nearby] PERSON 1: It’s too dangerous riding a bike with these cars around. I should get a car, too. (2) 50 Years Ago [two people between smaller car and bigger car] PERSON 2 with short hair: Small cars are less safe in collisions with larger vehicles, so I should get a bigger one. (3) Today [two people between big car and even bigger car] PERSON 1: Everyone has huge SUVs now. If I don’t get the biggest one, I’m putting my family at risk. (4) Soon [two people next to large armored car with spiked clubs attached] PERSON 2: If I don’t install more whirling spike clubs, I’ll be destroyed by all the other drivers who...

Interesting how the infrastructure advisory body goes into this level of detail for a key part of the transport network rather than "we should do a plan that..."👏

If people do drive, for better or worse it could typically be to a train station and use PT from there or park at nearby available commercial operators which I suspect is the case in Toronto too. People per car is also high for events compared to commute. But building wholesale parking like LA? No.
