"There are no bombs or bandages in Rudolf Wackerβs paintings, yet they chillingly capture the First World Warβs aftershocks..."
Rudolf Wacker's uncanny nightmares reimagined Weimar-era life to challenge the rise of fascism. Read about his work below:

"Love it or hate it, ALCHEMISED deserves thoughtful analysis."
Critics aren't discussing the most interesting theme in SenLinYu's dark fantasy novel ALCHEMISED. Here's what they've missed:

08.10.2025 08:36 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I use email drafts to note down ideas for my newsletters: this week's, linked below, covers SenLinYu's ALCHEMISED, Weimar art, and lamb's heart stew.
My notes for this week's newsletter were...stranger than usual.

As a big Henry Purcell fan, this is my sign to encourage all of you to listen to his music: start with "Dido's Lament", whether in its original arrangement or Klaus Nomi's different but excellent version.

It occurs to me that novel!Bond has a very Alan Partridge-style egotism about him. The legitimately funny gag in THUNDERBALL where he becomes a health nut who lectures his housekeeper about chewing bread is easily something Steve Coogan could pull off.
04.10.2025 23:14 β π 23 π 1 π¬ 2 π 0My favourite lighthearted example of this is Ronald Knox warning detective novelists in 1929 that "No Chinaman must figure in the story"...in the spirit of criticising authors using stereotypical ethnic minorities as villains.
03.10.2025 21:04 β π 7 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0JRR Tolkien gave an incredibly influential lecture that redefined how the poem BEOWULF was studied, and wrote a few novels too.
Roald Dahl also wrote some stuff, served as an RAF fighter pilot, and helped develop the Wade-Dahl-Till valve to treat hydrocephalus.
