Three Green Woodpecker chicks in a Quantock nest this morning
15.06.2025 12:28 β π 19 π 1 π¬ 2 π 0Four nests have been found so far across Devon and Somerset, including one brood of six). Thereβs still time to find more this week @lesserspotnet.bsky.social
31.05.2025 21:15 β π 9 π 2 π¬ 1 π 1Excellent find Stu and probably the first LSW nest found using a thermal camera. Brilliant effort. Hopefully it will have a good outcome despite the lateness of the predicted fledge date (the chicks look very young).
26.05.2025 19:08 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Here are young GSW calling from their nest site (this was filmed in early June, but some GSW nests are noisy now) @lesserspotnet.bsky.social
21.05.2025 07:06 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Here are young LSW calling from a nest site in a birch stump @lesserspotnet.bsky.social
21.05.2025 07:04 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0β¦and thermal cameras do help find and monitor woodpecker nests!
Hereβs a Great Spotted Woodpecker nest on a cool morning with older chicks making plenty of heat.

(Hikmicro Falcon FQ35 but SW optics have kindly loaned a Hikmicro Lynx 2.0 too.)
This ground-level Pied Fly nest now has seven eggs and adults seen at the nest @piedflynet.bsky.social @hurlstone.bsky.social
17.05.2025 16:22 β π 9 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Pied Fly pair have built a nest in this root hole, no eggs yet. Warm on thermal imaging. @piedflynet.bsky.social
10.05.2025 07:53 β π 13 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0Hi Carl, the @lesserspotnet.bsky.social works hard to find and monitor LSW on the Quantocks, would you be willing to share your sighting record details with us?
28.04.2025 05:37 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 04 Pied Fly eggs in the earliest of the nests on my Quantock run of boxes. 7/16 boxes have PiedFly so far and have really cracked on this week @piedflynet.bsky.social
26.04.2025 20:45 β π 14 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0My first Cuckoo of the year calling in Aisholt wood, Quantocks today (view is towards Aisholt Common)
16.04.2025 15:35 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Wood chips from an oak on the path - looked up to see a new GSW nest in progress in Hodders Co, Quantock Hills. (Thereβs an older hole below the new one too.)
14.04.2025 13:10 β π 10 π 2 π¬ 0 π 0A day of two halves in Somerset too - started with woodpeckers, Pied Fly and Ring Ouzels on the Quantocks, then the Whiskered Tern on the way home to start Acoustic Pipeline woodpecker recording analysis. Fingers crossed!
12.04.2025 16:26 β π 4 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0Lots of PiedFly on the Quantocks this morning, maybe five males on a loop walk.
06.04.2025 10:06 β π 10 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0These will both be listening for LSW at historical sites from today. Fingers crossed! Thanks for your work @simongillings.bsky.social @lesserspotnet.bsky.social
(And thanks to the Quantock Natural Landscapes team for the equipment loan.)
Red Kite over Higher Hare Knap, Quantocks, plus all three woodpeckers on the route in and out of the Combes. 3 GSW, 3 Green, 3 LSW!
01.04.2025 10:29 β π 24 π 1 π¬ 2 π 0Three LSW were heard (one seen) on a Somerset OS Quantock walk today looking for signs and holes of woodpeckers.
Sadly no LSW encounters yesterday on the same route, despite better weather.
Thanks to the brave folk who braved the hills and I hope we find more territories and nest sites this year.
We heard one that morning, but not everyone got it.
Perhaps Lesser Spotted Woodpecker should get one of the stamps on the bbc news this morning! @lesserspotnet.bsky.social
(Had 5+ heard this morning drumming this morning, somewhere else in the NF!)
I was on holiday from Somerset exactly because of this!
Have a look at the woodpecker network website if you want to read about our work in the uk, finding and monioring birds, esp Lesser Spots.
Had a pair of Syrian this afternoon. No Green in Poland, but thatβs ok by me.
06.03.2025 13:11 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0We saw many Lesser Spotted, they were plentiful.
06.03.2025 12:53 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The 8 were:
Lesser, Middle, Great, White-backed, Black, Grey-headed, Three-toed andβ¦damn, only 7 - need to find a Green this afternoon now!
The BialowieΕΌa Forest is absolutely incredible.
Syrian woodpecker (9th species) is nearby too. Really wonderful place.
Very luck to see a pair of Three-toed Woodpeckers in Poland this morning. The 8th species of woodpecker today and a supporting cast of Hawfinch, Woodlark, Willow and Marsh Tit, Waxwing, Crested Tit, Cranes, Bean/WF Geese and Rough-legged Buzzardβ¦plus other great birds and wildlife.

We are pleased to be working with Simon Gillings at BTO on this exciting project to use acoustic monitoring to help detect the presence of elusive Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers.
03.02.2025 17:10 β π 43 π 11 π¬ 2 π 0Not a lot of sun, but it broke through occasionally. Green vocal, gsw and lsw very quiet.
Happy to find some holes suggesting areas to focus on this year.
All three woodpeckers on Exmoor this morning @lesserspotnet.bsky.social @exmoornp.bsky.social
01.02.2025 14:21 β π 26 π 1 π¬ 1 π 1Hi Ade, would you mind messaging me where this was? I put in a fairly big effort finding Quantock LSW territories last year and your info would be really appreciated too!
26.01.2025 20:19 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Beautiful morning on the Quantocks. Tentative but of GSW drumming and some LSW calls briefly too.
The first Combe House hotel brunch of the year.
