How good is it to have a dedicated, publicly funded emergency broadcaster? Grateful to all the ABC local radio teams, keeping us company, making sure we're informed and connected, and bringing comfort to their communities this morning, as #tcalfred finally crosses the coast.

End of Term Web Archive – Preserving the Transition of a Nation | Internet Archive Blogs

The Internet Archive has to date downloaded 500 terabytes of US government websites, which it crawls at the end of every presidential term. The whole archive is fully searchable. Meta is abandoning fact checking – this doesn’t bode well for the fight against misinformation Numerous studies have shown that fact checking has helped reduce the spread of misinformation and disinformation online.

Some reflections with colleagues @nedwatt.bsky.social and @riedlinm.bsky.social at @theconvo-bot.bsky.social on Meta's decision to end its professionally funded fact-checking model in its platforms and adopt the X crowdsourcing model with a new 'community notes'πŸ‘‡ theconversation.com/meta-is-aban...

What is Bluesky? Why tens of millions of people are heading for a β€˜decentralised’ social media platform With a name that invokes freedom and a clean start and a design that promises to put control back in our hands, the Bluesky platform is attracting users away from Twitter/X en masse.

I was asked to write a short explainer about Bluesky for The Conversation - I hope I haven't done anything to annoy the more committed community members (I was an ambivalent and pretty slack early adopter). theconversation.com/what-is-blue...

Parliament delivers a performance piece of legislative 'enshittification' that raises more questions than answers Yesterday, parliament heard that the major parties will come together and pass a law banning teenagers from social media, after a period of careful thought roughly commensurate with that of a 15-year-...

Generative AI and the future of academic writing and publishing. This project examines the impact of Generative AI (GenAI) technologies on scholarly research and publishing. The project investigates how GenAI technologies are shaping the future of academic research from search to publication, including how academic publishers and peak research advisory bodies are responding to the potential of these technologies. The project develops a framework for understanding the sociotechnical drivers shaping the debate and establishes cross-sector principles to promote a more consistent and critical response by key stakeholders. In doing so, it supports ongoing learning within scholarly communities for a more responsive national research system, optimising GenAI for public good.

If so many experts oppose a social-media age ban, why is the government intent on rushing it through? Labor has been at pains to say people won’t need digital ID or to hand over their passport – but there’s nothing in legislation preventing it

Here's my analysis on the rushing of the social media ban bill. www.theguardian.com/australia-ne...
