Bay Area philosopher and general weirdo. My hobby is creepily monitoring birds. I consider a trailside vulture carcass a "buddy." I have a blog https://dog-envier.bearblog.dev/blog/

It's great, it's one of the great joys!

Rather than like through mass culture self help, I guess is the distinction I was thinking of. But either pathway makes sense to me

I obviously wouldn't be involved if it didn't help me too, but the direct influence was more like "what is this particular person doing, I want to be more like them" and they were already on the more religious track

It is an unusual and interesting although not completely unique experience to come into contact with someone who is so knowledgeable and thoughtful about Buddhism while also "not a Buddhist."

I came to Buddhist philosophy from philosophical pragmatism (and from making a very wonderful Buddhist friend), not from neuroscientific reductionism or self-help, so I've just got a very different set of blindspots and biases from the most prominent Western boosters and enthusiasts.

The forms of Buddhism it takes aim at are mostly not ones I'm attracted to, so I've mostly found myself cheering along with its arguments rather than feeling challenged (not that I agree with everything).

I'm reading *Why I Am Not A Buddhist* by Evan Thompson. So far it seems to be mostly a blistering takedown of the most scientistic strain of Buddhist modernism, primarily for failing to take notice of how Buddhist philosophy challenges shallow forms of naturalism.

Shabana Mahmood is an avatar of open Britain – that’s what makes her fable about immigration so seductive | Nesrine Malik β€˜She is the daughter of immigrants,’ supporters of her cruel asylum policies say. β€˜How can she be wrong?’ Let me put them straight, says Guardian columnist Nesrine Malik

"In her telling, racism and xenophobia seem not themselves objectively bad things that must be combatted, but a natural outcome that occurs when too many rights are given to immigrants and asylum seekers." www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
