Hand drawn musical staves with the words of the Coventry Carol, illustrated with silhouette drawings and ornamental marginalia reminiscent of medieval manuscripts.

Another old ink & gouache piece from 2006, approximately 420 × 297 mm. This was made into a 3-panel concertina Christmas card.

The Coventry Carol tells the story of the Massacre of the Innocents, and its mournful, minor key lullaby makes it a favourite of mine.

Two Sirens by Himmapaan | Redbubble Ink on Moleskine sketchbook paper, 128 × 206 mm. The sirenian is meant to be a dugong, though as none of its distinguishing features are visible, you could be forgiven for guessing it was a manatee.

In an underwater scene, a sailfish, a mola, a mermaid whose flowing hair recalls marine algae, a dugong, and several golden trevally are grouped together in a vertically-oriented composition with some kelp against a black background. The illustration is drawn with intricate linework, with an emphasis on contours and varying line weight, and with areas of solid black ink.

The Reverse Centaur’s Guide to Criticizing AI (permalink) Last night, I gave a speech for the University of Washington's "Neuroscience, AI and Society" lecture series, through the university's Computational Neuroscience Center. It was called "The Reverse Centaur’s Guide to Criticizing AI," and it's based on the manuscript for my next book, "The Reverse Centaur’s Guide to Life After AI," which will be out from Farrar, Straus and Giroux next June:

"AI is the asbestos in the walls of our technological society, stuffed there with wild abandon by a finance sector and tech monopolists run amok. We will be excavating it for a generation or more."

This piece on AI by Cory Doctorow is spectactular.

More traditional media experimentation! Watercolor, ink, color pencil, and a little bit of digital touchup.

Year of the Wood Snake artwork titled ‘Time for a Change’ in reference to the Lunar New Year Zodiac animals. The red paper and holographic vinyl snake sheds its delicate Tengucho paper skin from the previous year. It is nestled in a laser etched watercolor paper plum tree with copious pink blossoms. The wood surround is also laser cut with shell veneer and 24k gold leaf accents.

Year of the Wood Dragon is part of a Lunar New Year Zodiac series and features a cut paper and holographic vinyl dragon emerging from a laser carved wood surround. The green dragon is painted in watercolor and gouache with a wood, paper, and faux jade background. The dragon corners were hand sculpted in clay, molded, and cast in bronze with an antique patina applied.

This unicorn piece titled ‘A Gilded Chain is Still a Chain’ is based loosely on the medieval Unicorn Tapestries. The artwork is made of intricately laser cut and layered cloth book papers, embroidered in real gold and silk embroidery threads. The unicorn is painted on cut silk watercolor paper with watercolor and gouache. The piece is embellished with 13k white and 24k yellow gold leaf and vintage glass beads.

I just entered these pieces into the Infected by Art book competition, wish me luck! And good luck to all my friends entering as well!
