Quote from Octavia Butler: "When I was a kid and read science fiction, the science fiction available for kids at the library that I went to was all boys books and you get tired of reading boys books where the girls just kind of sit on the sideline and cheer the boys on and I think one of the things I wanted to do when I began writing my own was […] being the one who’s actually doing instead of the one who’s standing off to one side watching." Portrait of Butler with book. Cartoon dragon-like creature reading the book, "Kindred."

It is not your job to make it easy for those who would exploit or oppress you. Be difficult. Be stubborn. Be a problem that keeps them up at night.

Sometimes when you're away from home and overwhelmed by differentness, you need a small comfort break of familiarity. Ideally a very short break, to power you up for more wonderful differentness.

Remember that Wi Spa fiasco a few years ago? The trans person at the center of it was found not guilty on all counts last month. Everyone seems to have forgotten all about it. For years, along with Karen White, that was the number one argument for preventing British trans people getting a GRC easier

I know many people my age still have a lot of nostalgia around Harry Potter and might be tempted to watch the new HBO TV series.

Please, I'm begging you, do not tune in.

J.K. Rowling is singularly motivated. The new Harry Potter series is a cash cow intended to fund anti-trans bigotry.

Chart showing instances of wild animals using a hamster wheel left out in the wild, with visits dominated by wild mice, followed by slugs, rats, shrews and a few frogs and snails.

In 2014 Dutch scientists left a hamster wheel outside, to see if wild animals would use it like their domesticated counterparts.

The answer: hell yes! 734 visits from wild mice - plus rats, shrews, slugs ("running" being subjective here) & even frogs and snails.

The apparent reason: fun. Just fun.
