Conrad Wolfram talks education crisis:

β€œIn real-world maths, computers do almost all the calculating; in educational maths, people do almost all the calculating"

Result: Wrong algorithms/capabilities being emphasised, wrong style of maths thinking, poor complexity, management of automation. #TDC25

Today I'm at The Glasshouse International Centre for Music for this year's Thinking Digital conference. I look forward to this every year as a way to refresh my brain, even though I'm always exhausted afterwards. #SoManyPeople #ThinkingDigital #TDC25

I think it's important to be educated about the matters concerning modern society, so tonight I am watching Conclave.

Today I am venturing out into the world* to meet my local #edibuddies @the-ciep.bsky.social for lunch.

I haven't finished Balder's Gate 3 yet, and I would like to play more Starfield, but when I only have 20min available, then Terra Nil is what I'm turning to. I love it when the animals start to reappear on what used to be a wasteland.

Back from book club. A small group tonight, but we enjoyed Yellowface by R. F. Kuang. Recommended especially for #edibuddies who like dark academia.

I've booked an induction session at the local gym for Monday, so now I have to go.

CIEP Conference 2024

I've got my ticket for the Editing Festival this September, aka the CIEP annual conference! It's the only chance I get to see most of my #edibuddies face-to-face, and it's great for keeping my knowledge and skills topped up.
Hope to see some of you there!

My husband enjoyed The Last of Us, so I thought he might like #Fallout too. We're now two episodes in and we are both hooked ☒️

I can't say I was avidly awaiting a TV series of #Fallout, but now that it's here I had to watch it! I've only seen the first episode but I think it's off to a good start. The civilian and military bits both had a decent backstory with a 'what the f**k do I do now' cliffhanger.

I've been thinking about what media will persist for historians of the future. Will they be able to access our digital data? Will overhead projector slides be the enduring media of the 20th century? Will they be bamboozled by a Walkman and assume it has religious significance?

Back to school with a bump with an unexpected *double session* for today's A276 tutorial. It was great to be able to go into more depth than usual, but I wish I'd read the description more carefully beforehand!

Yes, I think I did! I'm a big fan. They don't offer Greek at the moment though, so that would be a reason to look elsewhere.

I'm really impressed! My school didn't offer any classics either, so I didn't even know it was a thing until way after I'd already done my maths degree. I'm doing my Greek study alongside an OU degree in Classical Studies. I think it works well as a combination.

It will be my 4th term with HM Classics Academy – I'm slowly working my way towards GCSE standard! I really enjoy my Saturday afternoon sessions. My tutor is Irish and she is fab.

Just finished watching Bodies. I loved it. It's definitely worth a month's subscription to Netflix. I've also caught up with Heartstopper and Sex Education and now I'm watching Wednesday.

Tokens and Social Life in Roman Imperial Italy is now out for purchase in book or e book form, or as a free open access piece online (!!): www.cambridge.org/core/books/t.... Hoping the book will spread token appreciation - they may be small and poorly preserved, but they are still great. ;-)

Sarah Anderson's comic. Her main character walks out side eating ice cream and thinks "it's so warm out!" and then, concerned, "but it's winter." Cheerfully, she thinks "nice to be outside," but then "it's not normal." Then cheerfully, having some ice cream, she thinks "lovely day" and also "THE EARTH IS DYING."

Me: waves finger in air, looks perplexed, pauses, waves finger again.
Him: You're doing Greek homework in your head again, aren't you?
Me: um, yes.
Him: I love you.

Minor Detail ebook by Adania Shibli - Rakuten Kobo Read "Minor Detail" by Adania Shibli available from Rakuten Kobo. Minor Detail begins during the summer of 1949, one year after the war that the Palestinians mourn as the Nakba – the cat...

This is brilliantβ€”in response to the Frankfurt Book Fair's contemptible erasure of Adania Shibli's brilliant MINOR DETAIL, her publisher Fitzcarraldo Editions has made the ebook free to download for the duration of the Book Fair, on Amazon UK, Apple Books, and Kobo.

I don't often work on fiction or with self publishers, so it's a bit different for me. I think that an introductory phone/video call is very helpful in setting the scope, even if agreed by email, and follow-up calls are useful when things are complex or time-sensitive. Still hate them though!
