The "pretend an egg is a baby" lesson. We *did* do an egg drop experiment in science class. Not the same thing, unless you have an extreme sports baby.

How to drive. I can't remember if my school didn't offer Driver's Ed, or if I didn't want to do it. I expect the latter because I was very anti-driving in my youth. Still kinda am, but I have to.

How to diagram a sentence. I mean, I know the parts of speech, and I can write a sentence. I just don't know all the little symbols and where they go to make the diagram.

Square dancing. We didn't learn any other cultural dances either, but apparently a lot of people learned square dancing in PE.

I just deleted my Amazon account too, since Bezos has also disappointed me with his support of the new regime. I was an early adopter of Amazon back when they just sold books, and I was so relieved when Bezos saved The Expanse. A show about the best of humanity and now he stands behind the worst.

It’s funny how intense some children are about hide and seek. Walking around like the Terminator looking for John Connor.

Some sci-fi revolves around independence. There’s also lots of β€œdiverse group forced to work together becomes found family” stories too. Star Trek, Firefly, The Expanse, The MCU, Doctor Who, Red Dwarf.

Sometimes I wonder if humanity's collective subconscious has a baseline of necessary misery and whenever things start to get too good we self-sabotage to swing the pendulum back the other direction, forever denying ourselves a near-utopia that is fully within our capabilities.

I don't remember the details of Bilquis's last scene in the American Gods book, but I remember it felt exploitative and gross. When I heard it was being made into a show, I was really worried I wouldn't be able to watch that scene. Don't know if it got filmed, I stopped after season 1.

Read about how people get angrier when cut off in traffic vs. bumped into in person. Because in person, you see someone’s face and body language, hear their tone, and you can feel that human connection. But a car is just a thing, so we forget a human is driving it. That’s us on the internet.

Depends how you define significant because there’s classical European and Asian music and like, Gregorian chants and stuff. But modern music? Oh yeah. Country, blues, rock and all its derivatives, etc. all of it mainly from black people. Huge contributions in lots of other arts as well.

Photo of italicized text on a textured paper background: To those who've survived: Breathe. That's it. Once more. Good. You're good. Even if you're not, you're alive. That is a victory.

This is from the beginning of The Stone Sky, by N.K. Jemison. I started reading it on election night, in an attempt to distract myself from continually checking the results.

Real life doesn't work like stories. Being right and being on the side of good is not enough to win elections. We need better strategies. We're dismissive of people on the right as being uneducated, but if we're so smart, why can't we effectively communicate our policies to them?

Yes, tariffs are a terrible idea, going to make life a lot harder for people who are already struggling. But "Oh no, we won't be able to order cheap crap made by children in sweatshops overseas and when it breaks in 3 months just throw it away and buy more!" is not a very progressive argument.

Funny how when our guy won, they stormed the Capitol. When their guy won, we started volunteering in our communities.
