AI Flight Pricing Can Push Travelers to the Limit of Their Ability to Pay
Airlines, including Delta, are testing artificial intelligence in pricing. Get ready for what one startup calls the βexploitation phase.β
My coworker @chafkin.bsky.social got ahold of an internal white paper from Fetcherr, the AI pricing company that is working with Delta and other airlines to make fare prices even more erratic for consumers. It details what the company calls the βexploitation phaseβ: www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

A four panel comic titled Bird Sounds. In panel 1, labeled thrush, a wood thrush sings its beautiful eeohlay song against a forest background. In panel 2, labeled wren, a winter wren delicately sings tweedly tweedly tweedly. In panel 3, labeled warbler, a yellow warbler delicately sings sweet sweet. In panel 4, labeled heron in a death metal font, a heron screams KRAAGH against a background of fire.
Bird sounds.

Yeah 100 AIC for a single cov is a lot. My guess is that something is going wrong but im out of easy guesses. Iβm happy to take a look if you want to send a reproducible example. Itβs hard to say what is happening from here.
16.07.2025 23:57 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
Hmm⦠a 23 level factor can be a lot but a single cov model sounds reasonable. Is that param extremely important? Are you seeing really high SEs elsewhere that indicate poor convergence?
16.07.2025 23:38 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
Gotcha. NAs in the betas or the SEs is suggesting that your model canβt estimate those params. I would check for multicollinearity and probably simplify your model. How many total covs are we talking here? You might just be overparameterized.
16.07.2025 23:06 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
Iβve run those plenty but not in unmarked. I havenβt seen this behavior before and sounds unlikely to be from an ecological process. I know you say you are using the same number of sites but do you have NAs in any covariate? If it is dropping any observations the AIC would be incomparable.

Will anyone review this paper? Screening, sorting, and the feedback cycles that imperil peer review
Scholarly publishing relies on peer review to identify the best science. Yet finding willing and qualified reviewers to evaluate manuscripts has become an increasingly challenging task, possibly even ...
1. Kevin Gross and I just posted a new science-of-science preprint.
This one explores the looming peer review crisis. As many of you know, it's becoming significantly more difficult for journal editors to find scholars willing to serve as peer reviewers for submitted manuscripts.
