I'll have to make one of these posts for Joe at some point too I think. But that will have to be a companion remembrance with Hayao Miyazaki (touchwood).
But for now, all that sadness is only potential, like water hanging on the edge of a fall.
And we get to live in the joy of their living art.
I always lump The Professor and Joe Hisaishi together. But where the Professor is a city boy who longs for the plains and farmlands in compositions like these, Joe is the opposite, layering themes of urban ennui into primarily pastoral pieces.
But that's personal head-canon, at most, I think.
When I first heard this record I didn't know it was an ost. For years I imagined it was a standalone track and Mr Lawrence was a funny friend of the Professor's.
Later , I discovered the Bowie flick it soundtracked, and found it wanting, but only in comparison to this supernova of a composition.
My first encounter with his compositions was in The Last Emperor (1987), which was my then best friend's favourite movie.
It took a few viewings to cut through the haze of my teenage cynicism and blossoming ADHD, but when it eventually connected, it was through the music.
Oh the music.
On March the 28th, 2023, Ryuichi Sakamoto passed away.
A part of my mind has been locked away in an unventilated room since that day, furiously collecting every scrap of beauty this radiant soul has added to the world.
This post will be a drip feed collection of those precious remembrances.

My TFT Set 13 journey.
1. Beat my previous PB time to Plat cos of extra practice time in PBE. Really jiving with the set mechanics!
2. IRL stuff delayed climb to Emerald by 2 weeks, but still a decent time for me. Dips in MMR around big patches, and when trying to learn new comps.
