Three separate views of the same indicator swatch: the overall swatch is a long rectangle made up of two squares. The left square has a snowflake icon in it, and the right square has a flame icon in it. The overall color of the swatch is dark gray, and the snowflake is light yellow. When cold, the yellow snowflake shows up against the dark gray, and the flame icon disappears because the cold thermochromic filament is dark gray. When warm, the thermochromic filament turns orange, showing both the snowflake and the flame. When hot, the thermochromic filament turns light yellow so the snowflake blends in and the yellow flame shows against the dark gray background.

I don't really use thermochromic filament much anymore (I found it's way too stringy and kind of finicky for temperatures), but I have to admit, this is one of my favorite things I did with it. Super fun proof of concept for using it as a thermal indicator.

Definitely potholders. Relatively quick to knit, so you get the satisfaction of a finished item pretty quickly. Just make sure to do cotton or wool and not acrylic since synthetic yarns aren’t usually meant for high heat (they melt).

Here’s how it turned out after wet finishing! I think for the rest of the braid, I’m going to add more twist to the singles.

Pro tip: Use incompatible 3D printing filaments to make reusable support inserts. The blue is TPU and the bronze is PLA. A little bit of glue stick on top of the TPU keeps the PLA stuck down during printing but also separates easily during post-processing.
