The worldโ€™s largest cold water coral reef lies beside the first experimental deep-sea mining test ... In a region once thought to be so ecologically uninteresting that it was viewed as a useful testbed for deep-sea mining equipment, NOAA researchers have detected what could be the worldโ€™s larโ€ฆ

It would be totally wild if the very first experimental deep-sea mining project came within a half marathon of dredging up the world's largest cold water coral reef. A reef we wouldn't even know existed for 4 more decades.

Anyway, that's exactly what happened.

A Bathypterois guentheri tripod fish I made a few years ago for my #SundayFishSketch today. They have modified pelvic and caudal fin rays that enable them to perch, elevated, above the sea floor. Their modified pectoral fins sweep out in front and are used to sense prey. #sciart ๐Ÿฆ‘

Oceanography for Everyone

I finally got around to updating the Oceanography for Everyone website. It's basic, but it gets the job done: oceanographyforeveryone.com

I'm pathologically incapable of seeing my own typos, so do your worst.

a squid floating funnel-side down, viewed from the side. it has a long structure that extends beyond the mantle fins that looks like an orange, really ratty bird feather. its body is translucent and dotted with orange chromatophores. its mantle is fairly short in proportion to the rest of the body, and its eyes take up most of its head. beyond the eyes are a thin column of translucent tissue that terminates in the arms, which start translucent and taper to narrower orange tips.

the same squid viewed from the opposite side. the squid is mostly translucent, with orange chromatophores of varying sizes throughout the mantle and other surfaces. its eyes are large, with black pupils outlined with a thin gold band. the arms are predominantly orange and taper to narrow tips. we can see the two clubs extending just beyond the rest of the arms - they are only slightly thicker than the tentacles.

i'm not done yet! it's been a good squid day ๐Ÿงช. schmidt ocean got some incredible closeup footage of a planctoteuthis during their ascent!

planctoteuthis is a weird one - they're known for having an elaborate secondary "tail" that extends past the main mantle fins.

Live from Dorado Outcrop | SOI Divestream 529 Welcome to ROV SuBastian Divestream 529! This is the first dive of our cruise Octopus Odyssey! We are diving on Dorado Outcrop off of Costa Rica, where an Octopus Garden was discovered in 2013. During this discovery, an estimated one hundred female octopuses were found brooding their eggs together in low temperature hydrothermal vents, a phenomenon that scientists have never seen before. We are here to better understand the hydrogeology, microbiology, ecology, and geochemistry of this region that may facilitate this fascinating behavior. Expedition: Fkt Octopus Octopus #Odyssey _________ We livestream all of our ROV Dives to YouTube and Facebook!
