Floating freely, software for fun, cats, my family, my town, my bike, sometime games, that's all. Truth, freedom then peace.
Perhaps after next elections, I hope they get rid of the problem themselves.

Make sure to have backups even before start thinking about installing an OS, any OS.
Among those I actually use for work.
Eclipse, KiCad and in general any application assuming that windows can be placed in specific places, most win32 applications do, even simple dialogs are all around the place.
By "broken" it varies from simply not functional to glitchy.
I could list all applications I -actually- use that are broken when starting with a wayland session.
24.02.2026 18:28 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0There is fractional scaling in Mint, not using it but it worked when I gave it a try.
Is there some specific problem I should look for?
Frankly I would avoid wayland until it matures some more.
Wine is especially impacted because windows applications expect capabilities that wayland simply does not provide (by choice).
X11 still provides the best compatibility overall.
Not the best idea only because windows hate, I would try to understand the real benefits first and the effort required. In any case, I recommend starting from here: linuxmint-installation-guide.readthedocs.io/en/latest/
24.02.2026 17:56 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Quite unlikely, I have been updating it since 2017 and it still goes great.
But thanks for trying.
Good approach.
23.02.2026 17:59 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0This is new for me... I do that all time.
23.02.2026 17:51 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Using Linux is the opposite than distro hopping and debating other people choices.
23.02.2026 17:43 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0Never had problems with Discord on Mint, what distro are you using?
23.02.2026 17:37 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Create a safe /dev/fstab.safe, on failure rename the file in fstab and reboot.
23.02.2026 05:19 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Other examples, you can place Java applications where you want usually, Eclipse for example, Wine/windows applications are also installable freely of course.
22.02.2026 20:29 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I happen to use many of those edge cases :-) this is my gaming PC, I have a lot more on the work one.
It is mainly commercial SW that has installers, yes there is also for Linux. Linux packages must go in their designed locations, you probably use those mainly but it is not the whole story.
There are, I use some development tools that have windows-like installers, I made an ~/Applications directory in my home and install in there. Also native games can be placed freely, WarThunder for example.
22.02.2026 20:21 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0You are trying to use windows "drives" concept into something that is not windows.
Installing packages means using standard locations, it is by design.
Applications that have installers can usually be placed where you want, usually somewhere inside your home or on some mounted drive.
Why that? Ubuntu and Mint, while not requiring to mess with the system and packages, do not prevent anyone to do so if they want either.
Those are meant to be stable and easy distro, in this context, could you provide an example of this supposed inflexibility?
Freedom

The Linux Mint apothecary.

Wasting time, it is Sunday.
The Debian governance:
#linux #debian
So, what will they do? block Linux sales?
22.02.2026 09:27 โ ๐ 18 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 4 ๐ 0Ok, I need to be fair, Arch too.

For a laugh I asked to imagine the Debian council debating on the Debian Linux future:
#linux #debian #council
I noticed CachyOS missing too, I asked in the same AI session:
"CachyOS was not included for the same structural reason as Mint: it does not operate under a formally democratic governance model."
Same applies for LMDE and others.
More about a simply "democratic Linux".
Interestingly Mint is not there because, while community driven, it is handled by a dev group with no internal democratic process (which is totally fine for me, I highly appreciate them).
#linux #democracy
I asked for a list of EU-based Linux distros that are not corporate-owned.
It omitted Arch and Debian because not strictly EU-based (but should be there in my opinion).
They incidentally forgot some Linux heavy weights: Arch, Debian, Mint (and probably others minor).
What they listed are only corporate-owned distros, sorry but not good enough, it makes me doubt also the rest.
Having no masters, for me, is more important than just being EU-based.
