Do You Grow Out of Autism?
Autism has come full circle; from perceptions of the disability as lifelong, to beliefs of βgrowing out of itβ and back again, all shaping how we support autistic individuals.
"You donβt grow out of autism; you grow into a world that isnβt ready." Only by acknowledging the full arc of autistic life can we create policies and programs that truly meet people where they are, writes @neuroscientist.bsky.social:

Neurodiversity Affirming Practice for Mental Health β Chronic Resilience
An overview of neurodiversity affirming practice for mental health, what this means, what this looks like and some resources for continued learning and reflection.
βNeurodivergent people are more likely to have experienced trauma, including chronic invalidation, that can have a lasting impact. This is why it is vital to be trauma-informed while also being neurodiversity affirming.β From The Chronically Resilient OT:

The Trump Administrationβs War on Children
The administration is quietly putting Americaβs children at risk by cutting funds and manpower for investigating child abuse, enforcing child support payments, providing child care and much more.
The staff of a program that helps millions of poor families keep the electricity on, in part so babies donβt die from extreme heat or cold, have all been fired.
The office overseeing the enforcement of child support payments nationally has been hollowed out.

Light blue poster with dark blue text and drawing of a brain in the centre. Title βwhat happens when autistic doctors teach hospitals teams about neurodiversity?β. Heading 1 βwhy was the study done?β text βNegative attitudes (biases) can stop autistic people getting good hospital care. Neurodiversity training can help but a hospital in Western Australia did not do this training yet. To focus problem autistic, neurodivergent doctors and researchers did a project. They made neurodiversity training for teams who work in the hospital.β Heading 2 βhow was the study doneβ text βThe study leads met hospital teams to find out what kind of training they wanted. A feedback survey found out about experiences in the training. Three hospital teams of doctors and nurses tried out the training. Austistic, neurodivergent doctors were the leaders training the hospital teams.β Heading 3 βresultsβ text βSurvey responses:
9 in 10 said the training was relevant.
8 in 10 felt more confident supporting autistic people.
9 in 10 felt more accepting of autistic people.
Neurodiversity training challenged biases.
Hospital teams wanted to know more about supporting neurodivergent people.
They changed their point of view to understand neurodivergent people better.β Quote box text βTo our knowledge this is the first study in an Australian hospital to demonstrate neurodiversity education leading clinicians to report more confidence and acceptance toward autistic people.β

We show the benefits of autistic doctors teaching hospital teams about neurodiversity.

Why Recess Should Never Be Withheld as Punishment
Experts argue that recess is necessary for a child's social and academic development, and skipping it as punishment for misbehavior or to accommodate more seat timeΒ is a serious mistake.
Taking recess away from autistic & ND as punishment for their meltdowns is a "Hell, no!"
Similarly, lack of EA support shouldn't be used as an excuse to withhold recess
They NEED that time
