Automerge 3 is here: the heart transplant is complete! Huge improvements in memory usage and (in most cases) correspondingly big performance improvements too. Backwards compatible on disk and the network so there's no reason not to upgrade today: automerge.org/blog/automer...

I've been hacking away in the evenings on a little piece of JS you can drop into any page and let someone add comments. State is stored in the URL, and the plan is for me to use this to get feedback on my posts. I give them a URL, they send it back. No server, no fuss.

We're so used to our data living in vertical silos we don't control that we can't even imagine what it would be like if our data could safely flow to wherever we needed it.

In an era of infinite software, code and data should flow like water.

Automerge has a reasonably well-specified file format but the challenge is incremental E2EE sync of large document collections with heterogeneous (and evolving) permissions without a centralized service while still supporting real-time sync.

Exciting! I think this stuff is super interesting but not obviously widely applicable yet. I do wonder if it might find use in a local-first account system? Looking forward to reading it.

It's quite charming when folks who have diminished eyesight send me emails with larger fonts. It's an interesting example of a folk adaptation: if you know how to size up your browser zoom / adjust screen resolution you wouldn't need to. I wonder sometimes if I should reply at the same size...

There are a bunch of variations on this thing these days. I don't think the Google Meet audio is a great solution for us (though it's cool tech). I think we would really benefit from something more task-dedicated.

Have you experienced anything other than the Owl? I've seen very mixed reviews of it and it's both expensive and large in my luggage so I'm hesitant to take the plunge.

Yeah, I was eyeing those up. They seem interesting but in addition to being hefty in my carry-on, they are also about 10x the price of the other options I've seen. Maybe worth it?

My current setup is a Logitech Brio 4k and an Anker Capsule 3 projector (not as bright as it could be but useful when there's no TV). I'm debating how best to improve the audio setup. I suspect remote joiners will mostly come in through a long-running Discord.

We're getting the lab together as we do a few times a year but not everyone can make it. I'm trying to improve our A/V systems to allow remote participation in our in-person meeting. What are y'all bringing with you? A Logitech Brio 4k and a Jabra 510? A combo video/audio thing? Something else?

This is a great question. I would say that sync engines are more valuable the more often the client works with the same piece of data. If data sort of passes through the client once and is then forgotten, it's less useful. If you want to run arbitrary queries or work offline: more useful.

That said, it's encouraging to see a skyline dotted with cranes. As climate change accelerates, I suspect more and more people are going to want to live both further north and in places where the ocean can moderate temperature extremes.

It's interesting to contemplate what the world will look like as urbanization "completes" and global populations begin to return to more historical levels. Climate change and political instability will likely continue to drive major population migrations but.. I guess we'll see!

We're living through an era of major urbanization as well as historic population growth. My father who was born in 1942 has seen the global population increase by 3.5x. On top of that, global urbanization has radically shifted where housing demand lies.

I suspect the dynamism of a city is closely related to the cost of real-estate there. Low rents (residential and commercial) make so many more ventures possible -- niche shops, small restaurants, and so on. When the cost of living, everyone is wealthier.
