Today MPs will vote on the amended welfare bill.

MPs who choose to walk through the lobby and support this bill are paving the way for at least 150,000 people to be pulled into poverty.

Blimey, these Labour proposals on PIP & UC are dire. But listening to Badenoch speak, Tories are terrifying - the idea of "deserving" & "undeserving". Only evidence to present - Taxpayers Alliance! Give me strength. Thankfully not in power, but mustn't be distracted into thinking this bill is good.

Maskell is cutting through to the root of problem, our economic model. We must tax the super rich to enable the rest of us to live good lives.

"They matter for being, not just doing". This is important for all citizens, our existence is not to merely make money for others. The state could enable us to care for ourselves, one another & the planet.

We need UBS: a universal, publicly funded system of essential services, free at the point of use and organised around human need.

We estimate unpaid carers are at risk of losing between £1.2bn – £1.7bn in income as a direct result of changes to PIP eligibility announced this week.

The green paper fails to fully engage with the scale of its devastation with much of this on top of £5bn announced 🧵

If anyone is taking the mickey it’s gotta be those scapegoating disabled people & people managing health conditions.

We have to resist this narrative that you are only deserving of compassion and support if you can take on paid work. We are all individually and collectively so much more than that.

At Care Full we support the #SafeSickPay campaign from @progressivechange.bsky.social.

For unpaid carers the fear of becoming ill is acute; it not only affects the practical aspects of care but the financial too.

The Chancellor's announcements today centre airport expansion and football stadiums over engagement with the devastating levels of poverty @jrf-uk.bsky.social are reporting in the here and now. At Care Full we're hopeful change is possible, but we need radically more ambitious ideas to get there.

Economic inactivity has many causes, but the term itself is biased, suggesting unpaid work doesn’t contribute to the economy. It’s essential to recognise that paid employment isn’t the only form of contribution and to value unpaid work for its vital role in supporting society and the economy.

We’ve written for the Big Issue about what we’re wishing for at Care Full this Christmas… a caring economy!

And that’s us for the year. We’ll be back in 2025 with exciting work towards a new economy that enables us to care for ourselves, each other & the planet ♥️
