Canada has a moral obligation to stave off a humanitarian crisis and a long-standing (+ well-supported) history of ignoring the American embargo on Cuba. It would be absurd if we didn't do something.

Excellent review from Ron Versus below:
βSandlos and Keeling have backed up their history with clear-eyed research and deep digging into fact-filled reports, some of them hidden from public view.β

I tell my students this all the time: we do not think, then write, we think *through* writing. All of it, from noodly early scratchings to outlines through, most importantly of all: revision.

Canada must support Cuba
"You cannot βlive within the lieβ of mutual benefit through integration when integration becomes the source of your subordination.β
Mark Carney said that Canada is "considering" sending aid to Cuba.
Before COVID, one million Canadians visited Cuba every year. Their convertavle peso is pegged to the Canadian Dollar. I argue that we need to send fuel and supplies ASAP, regardless of Trump.

If Cuba falls, and returns to being a U.S. vassal state and gangster's paradise, it will be to Canada's shame that we stood by and let this happen unopposed. /fin

Canada must make a strong stand against U.S. sanctions, interference, and bullying of Cuba. We must send aid and support to the Cuban people, now at risk of literal starvation due to American imperialist aggression. /5β¦

These actions by the United States echo a long history of American imperialism, interference, and extractivism in Cuba. While Cuba has its own democratic deficits and challenges, it also has the right to freedom and self-determination, rights that Canada once very publicly supported. /3β¦

As you know, @mark-carney.bsky.social our hemispheric friend Cuba is entering a deepening crisis in the wake of the illegal U.S. coup in Venezuela. Now, with further pressure on other trading partners like Mexico, the island is near collapse due to a lack of energy supplies and foreign exchange. /1β¦
