Hard to believe it's the 20 year anniversary of Hourly Comics Day! I've been doing them for 19 years 😱 This year I will be moving to Feb 8th in solidarity, to ensure we don't overshadow the beginning of Black History Month.

Oooo I have lots of advice.
1. Have the story planned out first. You don't have to have a really tight script, but it would be a good idea to have an outline with main story beats and an idea of the ending, unless this is just a gag strip or something.

2. Know why you are making the comic. If you are making the comic because you have a story you want to share or you want experience making a comic, cool. If you are planning on getting rich or famous, this is a bad plan and you will likely not gain either. Most comic creators are neither.

3. Don't make character designs too complex. It might not be too bad drawing a complex design once but keep in mind you may have to draw this character hundreds of times. Are you going to be able to draw a hyper detailed character hundreds of times without giving up?

4. The same goes for art style. You might envision a super detailed Berserk/Vinland Saga/Vagabond style for your story, but will you be able to produce that work and will you be able to complete it before you die? If that is a goal, it's something to consider.

5. Having an engaging story and characters is more important to your success than your art. You might feel insecure about your art, and honestly plenty of artists feel that. It's more important to have a good story and good characters. Most people won't read a pretty comic that is boring.

6. If you aren't getting paid to make a comic, you need to make something you are insanely passionate about. If you aren't really passionate, you won't be able to continue if nothing else is forcing you to work on it like a pay check.

7. It's important to make the kind of story you would like to read. Don't try to make a story you think will be popular. Don't try to chase trends. Trends change frequently and comics are very time-consuming to make. If you make something you like, someone else is bound to like it.

8. Don't base your success on numbers and don't compare your work to others. Comparison is the thief of joy. Try not to beat yourself up if you don't get x number of followers or page reads or anything. It's fine to think of ways to gain new readers but don't become obsessed with numbers.

Have friends who would read your comics. They're a safe way to build creative motivation.
