3/n Despite nuclear’s low operational emissions, its reliance on freshwater exposes climate risks. As cooling demands surge and hydrological patterns shift, energy planners must balance baseload reliability, ecological safety, and thermal efficiency.

2/n Nuclear power plants rely on vast volumes of cool water to condense steam and regulate core temperatures. But during heatwaves, two critical problems emerge: 1) Intake water is already too warm, limiting cooling efficiency. 2) Discharge causes thermal pollution, threatening aquatic ecosystems.
