Bowie stated he felt his true emotions only came out in his songs, especially in this period of his life. He felt he walked around like an iceman yet he would finish a song and think ‘whoever wrote that really felt strongly about it’ And in this case he likely felt strongly about Claudia Lennear.

Musically this song is a wonder. Mike Garson’s piano is just suburb and creates a spot on recreation of an exotic number you’d find in 19th century music hall according to Bowie. Meanwhile you have Mick Ronson on acoustic and electric guitar bringing an almost flamenco style to this song.

This track is an obvious nostalgic look back at growing up in England in the 1950s. The song is based on the novel by Hanif Kureishi that is a semi-autobiographical account of growing up in Bromley in the 1970s. Bowie himself had grown up in Bromley 7 years before Kureishi.

A song Bowie described with the words Traitor, Urban, and Comeuppance. It is such a beautiful song about hoping the worst possible death upon a hateful person. Instead of just wishing death upon someone to go beyond that to wanting them to lose everything to the point that they take their own life.

So, this is a love song to submission, when the brainwashing of the state has finally worked its way completely into the mind of the subject. It is meant to be the end of the protagonist’s struggle in Bowie’s 1984 musical idea.

Even Bowie himself is shocked he managed to make it through this section of his life that started late in the Ziggy phase, went through the Diamond Dogs, Young Americans, and Station to Station albums.

While deep in a drug addiction that was destroying every bit of his life it started even to seep into his political and philosophical views.

Fascism, authoritarianism, and totalitarianism were often on Bowie’s mind. He was like a canary in a coal mine when it came to bringing alarm whenever he would see this on the rise. But during the darkest periods of his life, he started to see it in a new way.

David had quite a depth of perception into the dark side of life. Much of his thinking has been the case through history and we're just seeing it clearer now with technology. Maybe we have chance to change for the better now? - Mike Garson 2020

While the song is obviously a reference to the novel 1984, I chose it for today since it is the birthday of Terry Burns, Bowie’s half-brother.

It makes me realize that my decision for this idea to blossom into a second year was the right one. Next year I will be doing another 365 days of Bowie with an emphasis on all of those Bowie worked with throughout the years.

When I dig into songs like this and find the deeper stories behind them and the many extremely talented musicians and producers that Bowie worked with who helped mold his sound and vision.

The heaviness of the album could also be attributed to Bowie being checked out, leaving Visconti and Ronson almost free reign to arrange and produce much of the music. They even decided to add a section to this song that meant Bowie had to come up with additional lyrics.

It’s also the first song to allude to homosexuality and mixed in themes of madness, as the idea of mental illness was something that was often on Bowie’s mind, especially during this era.

Lyrically the song delves into Bowie’s entire life from his teenage years all the way up until his present. It was hints of mysticism laced with the heavy bouts of depression that marked this time in his life.

This song was originally going to be performed in an acoustic folk style as the album was going to be half electric and half folk much like what Bob Dylan was doing. But just listening to Ronson’s killer guitar riffs it becomes quite obvious why this idea was quickly abandoned.

The change of direction of leaving folk music behind was quite obvious on Th Man Who Sold the World as Mick Ronson’s guitar, Visconti’s Bass, and Woodmansey’s drums quickly set a hard rock ethos that makes you realize Bowie is heading head first into what will soon become glam rock.

Bowie’s lines are fed through a vocoder for this performance. The song relies heavily synthesizers and drum programming. But there is some time for a Bowie sax solo as well as trumpets and organs to sneak their way in as well.

Maybe it’s the non-conformist in me, but I’m the kind of guy who scrolls Yelp to find the restaurant with the lowest ratings. I own a car that is one of the biggest sales flops of all times. And I like the song that others say is so lame it should be excised from its album!

The song is a touch on the funky side and even uses a Chapman Stick instead of a traditional bass. Rumors are that the song’s title and lyrics stem from Boss Me-80 processor that was used in early stages of the album.
