On the awkward, thorny relationship between art and money, with author David Berry
In his new book, the cultural critic looks at how the dynamics play out in everything from music to painting
"It simply happens that Berry both carries the thoroughness of a journalist in his work and considers that work to be artistic. He treats his arguments with refreshing grace."
Thanks to @joshokane.bsky.social for talking through the new book with me

This burgeoning movement seeks to root criticism of (and response to) Big Tech in ideas of health (public, social, intellectual, and spiritual) and morality rather than size and power, positioning the rise of social media and the platform giants as something between a public-health scare and a spiritual threat, rather than (solely) a problem of political economy or market design. I see versions of this school of thought not just in speeches and op-eds from Auchincloss and Cox or blog posts from Thompson, but in Chris Hayesโ book The Sirenโs Call and in the inescapable work of Jonathan Haidt. (You might broadly think of Hayes and Haidt as representing โleftโ and โrightโ tendencies of the broader movement.) Notably, all of the above-mentioned have found platforms on Kleinโs podcast. Back in a January interview with Hayes, Klein offered up a kind of political vision or prediction rooted in this tendency:
Thompson dubs this loose movement, or at least the version touted by Auchincloss, โtouch-grass populism,โ but I think this is wrong: The framework in question is distinctly not โpopulistโ (unlike, say, the neo-Brandeisian โnew antitrustโ movement that has been a major focus of the โtechlashโ to date) so much as progressive in the original sense, a reform ideology rooted in middle-class concerns for general social welfare in the wake of sweeping technological change. At its broadest you could maybe call this budding program of restriction, restraint, and regulation โPlatform Temperance.โ But that name describes a broad tent, and like the progressive movements that emerged in the late 19th century, it can produce both grounded liberal-technocratic visions, and paternalistic, pseudoscientific, and ultimately harmful moral panics.

URGENT โ Stop Alberta's government from overriding the Charter of Rights
Alberta Premier Smith plans to use the Notwithstanding Clause to pass laws that erase rights and silence the courts.
In less than one day, over 8,000 Albertans have signed this petition and sent letters to Alberta's Premier, local MLAs, and the Opposition Leader.
If we donโt act, we teach every future government that rights are temporary.

Let's be clear about what happened today.
Premier Smith introduced a bill to strip Albertans of Charter rights,
denied MLAs the opportunity to debate it and the courts the ability to scrutinize it,
and did all of this from her seat on a jet to Saudi Arabia.

The Geometry Problem
Suburbia doesn't scale
"Simply put, the Geometry Problem is that cars are much bigger than humans. ... these physical differences mean that when we optimize places for cars, they end up not working well (or working at all) for any other mode. They become *car-only* places."
