I think it’s the Michael Schur style humour in general that became oversaturated that did it. The Office and Parks & Rec became so popular that ALL American comedy modelled itself after them. All shows started doing the “Oh we’re doing that?” but instead of a sarcastic tone, it became a silly tone.

I do think this is indicative of the sheer absurdity of what we're living through. OpenAI is allegedly worth $500 billion - more than Netflix - and this is their brand new product that is meant to be super powerful. Does this really make a billion dollars a month? This thing? ChatGPT?

So the art they make ends up trite. Cliched and heavy-handed. Childlike, seeking to teach others messages like a Sunday school sermon. Comedy is perhaps most dependent art on understanding people, and when your understanding is so basic, you’re not gonna connect.

You see this repeated over and over in conservative bubbles. Many failed writers, actors, screenwriters, all angry that a piece of art challenges them by showing understanding or empathy for minorities - now to such an extent that mere presence of a minority is too much of a challenge.

This isn’t to say conservatives can’t make great art. David Mamet comes to mind as a brilliant artist who’s conservative. But many don’t value empathy or seek to understand others, so they end up failing to understand why people appreciate, love and need art beyond its surface level aesthetics.

The reason most of the arts is full of left-leaning people is because empathy and understanding others is a natural byproduct of creating art that resonates with others.

Conservatives, meanwhile, are trying to say “empathy is a sin” now.

Rush Limbaugh tried at the height of his fame in the early 90’s and failed. Either on his radio show or his tv show, he’d read out the obituaries of those that died in the AIDS epidemic to a laugh-track. Reagan would make jokes about it at dinners with foreign dignitaries.

That could be it, too much caffeine too close to trying to sleep. I used to experience the same thing because I drank 600ml of Iced Coffee every afternoon after school/uni. Once that stopped, no more throbbing percussion tinnitus.
