ICE Is Terrorizing Chicago for Halloween—and Parents Are Fighting Back Fear and a whiff of tear gas hang over festivities this year. In response, even people who aren’t usually politically engaged are mobilizing.

On the occasion of Halloween, @newrepublic.com asked me to write about what’s going on in Chicago and I wanted you all to know what randomized terror feels like. And also that as the federal government fails our kids, everyday Chicagoans are showing the courage of trying to protect them.

Thank you for putting into words how it feels. Hearing the helicopters overhead when I walk the dogs. Finishing a meeting in time to go patrol the local school. Being brave while our hearts are breaking every day.

Welp, I didn't know I'd be putting a moderate exercise program in place by patrolling our local school to watch for ICE, but I'll take the tiny little silver lining.

Chicago showed us that when workers, students, the Mayor, and community members all stand up together, Trump backs down.
