NEW YORK (AP) — New York City's comptroller, mayoral candidate Brad Lander, has been arrested while visiting an immigration court.

Lander was making his third trip to accompany immigrants attending court hearings over the last month as federal agents, often masked, have begun staking out courtrooms to detain people leaving what had been routine hearings. He is the only mayoral candidate who’s done so.

It's easy to assume Lander got arrested on purpose to raise awareness (or "as a publicity stunt" if you're cynical) but for weeks he's been quietly escorting immigrants through the court precisely because typically his presence would protect THEM from arrest

No one should face fear and intimidation in a courthouse, and this administration’s continued rampant targeting of New Yorkers makes our communities less safe.

It is bizarre the way people with guns, bulletproof vests, riot shields, tanks, and other military gear act like rocks are an equal threat. It’s madness! If you are scared of rocks and think the punishment for having them thrown at you should be death, you shouldn’t be in law enforcement!

All said though, it’s a great school & somewhere he can be happy & comfortable learning how to be a full fledged adult.

It went really well! I think the Kid is sold on the school he picked but, I’m gonna be honest, I believe the fact that it’s the school his (other) dad doesn’t want him to attend makes it that much more appealing.

Successfully raised a whole ass human being into an adult(ish) person who graduated from high school tonight. I feel like I time traveled somehow because he was just 13, he’s still only 8, he’s a tiny baby in my arms—but I’m hugging a young adult who’s going off to college in August.
