I joined Julie Kohler on the podcast White Picket Fence to talk about how the "girlboss" paved the way for today’s tradwife trend, and how burnout under capitalism makes that fantasy feel like freedom. Listen here: lnk.to/wpf-ep5

"But there was another sense in which Helen is an exemplar for me. It is not only the way in which they responded to particular situations, but also, and I think primarily, how they curated and directed their life as a whole. I’m not sure how to articulate it, and that difficulty is likely why I need someone like Helen to exemplify it. I understand it by observing what they did; by watching and admiring the way they picked their projects and causes and interests and sources of meaning. Curiosity doesn’t quite do it justice; even awe or wonder, which would seem so apt, since that is the topic of their recent book, doesn’t perfectly capture what I saw in Helen’s life. It was a quiet, deep dedication to exploring the full extraordinary range of topics and issues that engaged their mind, exploring them in the modes they found engaging, and exploring them together in community in a way that eschewed hierarchy and was grounded in a profound intellectual generosity. Instead of doing the things they might have done to succeed in an academic world whose incentive structure and reward model they judged deeply flawed, Helen instead did only what they thought valuable and brought the rest of us along with them."

After yesterday's memorial for Helen de Cruz, I am left thinking about what we are all trying to articulate about their admirable ethos: the way they encouraged us to pursue the passions, hobbies, & projects that really interest us. In this tribute, Richard Pettigrew does a good job expressing this:

connection with the recent fragmented mind hypothesis in Phil Mind discourse. I would love to know what you think about it or connect and discuss it if you would like that.

I was absolutely overjoyed to read your amazing article and to come across someone as amazing as Mary Midgely. It inspired me even to read her book, 'Wickedness' which was such an insightful read. Loved the integration angle she talks about, and even made me curious about this moral psychology(1/2)

The Epistemic Determinants of Health Health and illness are significantly determined by knowledge and its communication. At first glance, this might seem obvious; people use healthcare systems when they suspect that something might be wr...

I'm really excited to finally be able to share this after months of work - our new Project EPIC report on the epistemic determinants of health. With over 20 contributors, we make the case for incorporating this new framework into existing determinants of health models:
