Applebaum on Autocracy Anne Applebaum warns that Sudan’s descent into chaos shows what happens when institutions fail—and why a free press is essential to prevent America from following the same path.

Anne Applebaum: "If American media can’t convey how dangerous this behavior is—for our prosperity, for our health, for our democracy—then American media will eventually cease to exist."

Smart Home Device Maker Renders Devices Dumb Unless A New Subscription Is Paid For This isn't going to stop happening unless governments finally get involved to do their most basic job: protect their citizens. This habit among digital and tech companies of selling a thing only to claw back some of the function of that thing after the purchase is both rampant and, frankly, getting ridiculous. It's bad enough when a company goes fully kablooey…

Will everyone quit and roll over? The law firms, media companies, universities, government employees. Will you all cling to what you have and hope you can just ride it out, Republic be damned? Shame on all of you who don’t stand up, just remember we will never forget.

Democrats offered an amendment to simply ensure that if taxpayers spend $1 billion retrofitting a Qatari jet, it doesn't transfer to Trump after his presidency for his personal use.

Republicans voted NO and blocked the amendment.

This is the most corrupt administration in history. Easily.

Trump's EPA is trying to destroy the Endangerment Finding -- the solid scientific conclusion that greenhouse gases are dangerously changing the climate. They've published fake, misleading claims from climate deniers. This will devastate efforts to stop climate change. The EPA comment period is open.

Sometimes the historical dictionary offers solace through the existence of an obsolete word that is sorely needed now. One of them is ‘respair’, recorded just once, in the 15th century. It means fresh hope, and a recovery from despair.

This is not how we treat allies.
This is not justice.
This is cruel, nonsensical, and dangerous.

We promised protection to those who risked everything for the U.S. mission. Breaking that promise isn't just shameful- it puts future partnerships and lives at risk.

The ruling came days after Republicans voted to kick millions of Americans off healthcare – which will likely cause medical debt to skyrocket.
