Watched S5 E1 ("The Crawl") of #StrangerThings last night & was thrilled to see gorgeous examples of drill holes made by a yellow-bellied sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius) in the trunk of what's likely a loblolly pine (Pinus taeda); Will Byers (Noah Schnapps) for scale. ๐งช๐ฒ๐ชต๐ฆ๐ณ๏ธ

Anatomically regionalized ecological adaptation across the bird and bat skeleton.
While birds and bats both developed adaptations for flight, the way they went about it is so fundamentally different it affects their possible ecological adaptation. Specifically, birds can easily shift to a walking lifestyle, bats can't. ๐งช

#Dinovember Day 27: Minmi!
Fun fact: This small Aussie ankylosaur has often been confused with the very similar Kunbarrasaurus and considered possibly invalid. In 2021 it was argued that it was distinct enough to be its own taxon.
Minmi also wants to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving!

Coloured pencil drawing of a small black and white bird with a red crest perched on an old snow-covered electricity pole, with a grey sky behind.
I began this drawing as a simple sketch to test some paper (a new batch of Fabriano Artistico 300lb). The red crest was such a treat to draw after using so many greys! I see and/or hear red-bellied woodpeckers almost every day, but it never gets boring :)
Iโm happy with the paper. #SciArt #Birds

4-panel vertical comic. (1) 100 Years Ago [two people standing next to bicycle with small car nearby] PERSON 1: Itโs too dangerous riding a bike with these cars around. I should get a car, too. (2) 50 Years Ago [two people between smaller car and bigger car] PERSON 2 with short hair: Small cars are less safe in collisions with larger vehicles, so I should get a bigger one. (3) Today [two people between big car and even bigger car] PERSON 1: Everyone has huge SUVs now. If I donโt get the biggest one, Iโm putting my family at risk. (4) Soon [two people next to large armored car with spiked clubs attached] PERSON 2: If I donโt install more whirling spike clubs, Iโll be destroyed by all the other drivers who...

55m-year-old eggshells unearthed in Queensland may be older relative of infamous โdrop crocsโ
Scientists believe new discovery to be the oldest crocodilian eggshells ever found in Australia
"Some mekosuchines were partial tree dwellers, such as the ridge-headed crocodile, which has been nicknamed the 'drop croc' because it may have climbed trees and dropped on to animals passing below." @donnadlu.bsky.social

A six-panel comic. In panel 1, text says "People often wonder, why don't I see baby pigeons? Here's where they're hiding:" and there's an egg with an arrow pointing to a question mark, then an arrow pointing to an adult pigeon. Panel 2 says "Pigeons don't nest in trees. They nest in sheltered spaces on or in buildings. This keeps their babies safe from weather and predators." There's a pigeon nesting in a sheltered cavity in the side of a building. Panel 3 says "The hidden babies look like this: like moldy potatoes, but cute" and there are two baby pigeons looking, well, like moldy pink and gray potatoes with yellow fuzz. Panel 4 says "Older baby pigeons hide in plain sight. When they leave the nest, they're adult-sized, but they're still young and learning" and a fledgling pigeon is flying out of a building saying "aaaaaa". Panel 5 says "Here's how to identify these young pigeons" and shows a fledgling pigeon with arrows pointing to these features: eyes may be gray-brown, pale-edged feathers, smaller "nose" (cere), subdued hues, and looks worried. Panel 6 says "Scientifically speaking, though, all pigeons are sweet babies" and there are three very cute round pigeons, a gray, white, and red one, with arrows pointing to them to make things look scientific.
Baby pigeon mystery.

The history of continental formation and mantle thermal evolution is incorporated to guide the exchange of carbon during mantle degassing, crustal formation, subduction and chemical weathering, as well as the geochemical cycles of sodium and magnesium. The changing atmospheric pCO2 and ocean pH are tracked throughout Earth history using ocean charge balance.
When continents became a thing, they might have changed the ocean in a fundamental way. All those minerals being eroded and turning into dissolved ions, which found their way into the ocean, where alkalinity and pH subsequently increase. ๐งชโ๏ธ
