Spend my time thinking about crochet blankets, education, and children's career aspirations. Not necessarily in that order.

I was just talking yesterday to a colleague about the importance of helping new students to settle into the challenges of studying in the first 3-4 weeks at university.

The merits and dangers of subject knowledge What Dr Fox (or Ken Robinson) teaches us about the importance of teachers' subject knowledge

Just because they’re funny doesn’t mean they’re right. The Dr Fox Effect shows we mistake charisma for clarity. The more you know, the harder it is to see what novices don’t. That’s the Curse of Knowledge. Know your subject and how it’s learned.

Britain isn't broken We have our problems but the doomerism is getting out of hand

New post just out:

"Britain isn't broken"

We have our problems but the doomerism is getting out of hand.

I look at the real picture on crime, migration, social cohesion and the economy - rather than the dsyoptian fantasies of the radical right.

Yeah, strangely 'change society' isn't considered a reasonable strategy. Which is a shame.

The damage that TwXter has done to British national discourse is obvious when politicians and their advisors talk about DEI and other strongly-US focused talking points. They can't even get the letters in the order we generally use them in the UK.

Interesting blog about this paper on AI.

Particularly important to think about what problem the AI is meant to be solving, and to involve practitioners and patients in the testing of the tech in actual settings, not just simulations.

A cartoony illustration of a doll version of Hana in packaging along with accessories. It’s labelled β€˜Hana the Sci-Artist: action figure starter pack’. Doll Hana has her dark curly hair down with streaks of grey, is wearing glasses, an orange cardigan, a blue dress with moths, mushrooms, ferns and crescent moons on it and blue boots. Her accessories include pens and pencils, a glue stick and scissors, a badass science lady badge and a science is not neutral badge with a watermelon on it, a MacBook, a water bottle with dinosaurs on it and two EpiPens and two inhalers. Text bubbles say β€˜with EpiPens and inhalers’ and β€˜accessories expansion pack available’

This is very much the case, especially in science-themed books. I'd like to see picturebooks where diversity is important but also incidental to a cracking story.
