Officers have also struggled to meet their quotas because immigrants are refusing to open their doors when ICE officers knock. The enforcement teams generally do not possess criminal arrest warrants that would allow them to force their way into their targets’ homes. ICE officials say they can’t afford to leave teams of officers waiting around for targeted immigrants to exit their homes.

young posters, the use of language changed before you were born, so in case you didn't know this:

the reason things like Social Security and Medicare are called "entitlements" isn't (derogatory) it's because access is *guaranteed* in exchange for your advance payments into the program

another great example along with Wired and Teen Vogue of how real journalism these days can be a lot braver at outlets where no one is trying to get in good with the White House press secretary

they’re out here with us, reporting on what’s happening to us all, instead of trying to get inside access

I keep seeing "Why aren't the Americans striking" and "Because our healthcare is tied to our jobs" and it never gets less true or less depressing

Also because of the way the US is structured, only federal employee strikes would impact the federal government and they're currently suing to stop what's happening. A lot of the general strike discourse skirts the violence issue too. Cops have no problem using their unions as shields for murder

That’s rich, coming from the guy who used his power as a federal judge to start making (at least) interns and clerks sign nondisclosure agreeements because he was afraid of being outed as a sexual harasser.

So.

It has officially happened. I have been officially let go from my position at CDC. I wasn’t a probationary employee. I had stellar performance reviews every year.

I’ll be ok. But please understand that many worked HARD to get into these positions and were doing great public health work.

One of these days we're gonna have to reckon with the fact that "money that I spend which does not directly benefit me is a waste" is a popular sentiment.

I think we should state plainly that this is selfish on its face.

And stupid when you have awareness which extends beyond your nose.

Research universities are often the largest employers in their region. They are often the primary health care providers to communities. This funding shift will not only reduce US research leadership, it will put working people out of work and reduce healthcare access.

Because this is getting downplayed in some of the coverage, the racist staffer DOGE rehired isn’t a case of β€œstupid things he wrote years ago as a teen.” He posted about how we should β€œnormalize Indian hate” IN SEPTEMBER.

Nope.

It’s pretty obvious that the movement that overthrew apartheid in SA continues to make a lot of white American moderates and liberals uncomfortable and that’s why we get sanitized Teddy Bear Mandela the same way we get sanitized Panda Bear King but uh it’s all right there

I know the Apartheid Clyde jokes may be unfamiliar to folks not friendly with Black Twitter but I keep finding it odd that so much of the analysis re Musk’s behavior and goals is being framed through other systems of organized kleptocracy and supremacy and not via the one he comes from

low-key one of the most insidious dumb guy beliefs of the last few decades to gain widespread purchase has been this notion that demonstrating pro-social behavior in the hope that others would notice and mirror it, one of the fucking building blocks of any kind of society, is somehow β€˜fake’.

The #Resistance Lives. It Just Looks Different This Time. Defying mainstream media narratives about the exhausted opposition, protests are picking up in D.C. and across the country, led by protesters who never hung up their placards to begin with.

This @melissagiragrant.com piece takes on social media narratives about protesting ('why aren't people in the streets?'), and highlights the fact that many communities have BEEN protesting, never STOPPED protesting, are ALWAYS fighting for their lives.

Srsly. Appeasement has never worked to curb fascism. Thought we finally learned this for good in the run-up to WWII, but clearly not.

We've warned for years that on-campus surveillance (the explosion of CCTV cameras, schools using facial recognition, keycards that track student movements, etc etc) would be weaponized by a future government to chill speech and attack vulnerable students

Article title: Agenda Seeding: How 1960s Black Protests Moved Elites, Public Opinion and Voting

Article Abstract

How do stigmatized minorities advance agendas when confronted with hostile majorities? Elite theories of influence posit marginal groups exert little power. I propose the concept of agenda seeding to describe how activists use methods like disruption to capture the attention of media and overcome political asymmetries. Further, I hypothesize protest tactics influence how news organizations frame demands. Evaluating black-led protests between 1960 and 1972, I find nonviolent activism, particularly when met with state or vigilante repression, drove media coverage, framing, congressional speech, and public opinion on civil rights. Counties proximate to nonviolent protests saw presidential Democratic vote share increase 1.6–2.5%. Protester-initiated violence, by contrast, helped move news agendas, frames, elite discourse, and public concern toward β€œsocial control.” In 1968, using rainfall as an instrument, I find violent protests likely caused a 1.5–7.9% shift among whites toward Republicans and tipped the election. Elites may dominate political communication but hold no monopoly.

I’ve been studying civil rights protests for 20 years. With new mobilization against Trump’s agenda, I’m sharing a thread summarizing my research on how nonviolent & violent actions by 1960s activists and police influenced media, elites, public opinion & voters. 1/ www.cambridge.org/core/journal...
