Prompted by the paint demo below, taking a lil detour to try hooking a #SNES Mouse directly up to #GameBoy (snes controller protocol over link port).

Commited a few crimes with the latch and clock polarity (signal inverter not here yet), but it still manages to ~work on a DMG.

Yep it's a noticeable difference in clarity! I'd say the one thing I miss about the stock camera is being able to take selfies. Gonna start carrying both carts just in case 😂

I'm also an indie hobbyist — I'd say none of this conversation applies to teams trying to make a profitable game in today's market.

I just wish major publishers would give a little more thought and support toward preserving their legacy. I don't want to keep re-buying Link's Awakening lol.

HTML (bitsy, Twine) and Game Boy (GB Studio) are my go-to's. RPG Maker 2k3 is also pretty popular.

I'll admit I'm biased toward interactive fiction — I have no idea how to make 3D games future proof, if that's even possible.

For game dev today, I'd say pick hardware or software that is well understood and can be easily emulated if you want your work to be playable down the line.

I'm so excited. I did a short playthrough of Slay the Princess not too long ago and just started episode 1 today. I have no idea what the game is about, but if it's anything like StP, I'm excited to get my heart crushed!

Yeah keep at it! Pixel art is very rewarding — it takes practice, but it's really fun once you get the hang of it.

I highly recommend Saint11's pixel art tutorials if you haven't checked them out already. They helped me when I first started out!

I guess what I'm saying is, we're writing our legacy in sand. Though I guess seasoned game devs have known that for a long time.

That's why I love GB Studio. I can make a game for specific hardware, and distribute it online or on physical carts. The game could survive in the real world in the unlikely event its ROMs disappear online. Sure, the hardware has tight limitations, but that's where the challenge and fun is.

It's why I'm sad that the industry is slowly shifting away from physical media. In past generations, games targeted specific hardware. As long as your console works, you can play the games made for it. You can save the discs and carts, no matter what happens to the game on online storefronts.
