I enjoyed Thunderbolts, but it tanked, so possibly you shouldn't listen to my advice. It directly follows from Black Widow. Spiderman and Doctor Strange were good, but I'm not a multiverse fan. Guardians 3, you should see. The only thing I saw more than once (my yardstick) is Deadpool and Wolverine.

FBI and NSPCC alarmed at ‘shocking’ rise in online sextortion of children Snapchat logged about 20,000 cases last year of adults grooming children online, more than other social media platforms combined Tech companies including Snapchat and Facebook reported more than 9,600 cases of adults grooming children online in the UK in just six months last year – the equivalent of about 400 a week. Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA), have grown increasingly alarmed about the growing threat from sextortion and other crimes targeting teenagers. I don't involve myself in UK politics but have Cambridge friends who do, and it seems significant that the local Labour branch has finally split - dissidents have gone off to form their own progressive party. I'm told Gaza was the final straw, though far from the only one.

It's terrifying to see how many people are unable to grasp the extent of the crimes Russia commits daily, how easily they hide behind 'both sides' narratives. It's like walking in a tick fog. It's terrifying to report on horrific news & be met with, 'But are you sure this war crime really happened?

Parents the world over instinctively understand that a pillar of socialisation is association. Whatever monitoring capability they had before, they lost completely.

This alone merits a side-point: the bias within the university and academic publishing about who “counts” as a researcher actually leaves the vast majority of people who engage in the activity of research, very few of whom are employed at traditional academic instititions, completely out in the cold

As a non-traditional researcher without institutional access I can tell you: publishers have made it increasingly impossible to access scientific research. You aren’t even at the stage of competing against algorithmic systems because every paper is behind a $100+ fee to even read

Fragmentation of the moral ecology, et voilà?

Need to look at this properly.

"We're all throwing dildos at women athletes to promote our memecoin" really puts a fine point on not just how sexist, mean and stupid so much of right now is, but also the grim degree to which we're just inundated with Stuff a 15-Year-Old Dipshit Would Think is Cool. A confederacy of Beavises.

haha this rules.

folks don't know that AIs scraping websites accounts for like half of all internet bandwidth usage right now. Sites get scraped- ie, all the contents downloaded- over and over again, destroying/wasting their bandwidth, often maxing it out. It's like being continually DDOS'd

I hope other companies are paying attention to the M&S situation. They bring a vexatious complaint with no substance at all, you issue a cowardly apology and completely sell out your employee, they reject your apology and call for a boycott anyway. You can't reason with unreasonable people.

Students wouldn't get it. To wit: each year, the number who've never seen Star Wars gets higher. Using Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader to explain radicalisation and terrorism works so well, though. Big hit with the FBI - back in the day when there was an FBI.

We got old, Froon.

My digital hygiene is far from perfect, but no smart devices in my home beyond my phone (no assistant there), same as I've never set foot on Instagram, Facebook or TikTok. I blame (credit?) the work of my colleagues at The Centre for Future Crime, as much as my own.

How I'll fill in my annual appraisal from now on:

"I conveyed some signals to my students and colleagues on a number of issues and received corresponding signals from them."
