Jess, you could replace terrorism by any other societal challenge - climate change or poverty or social inequality - and you'd be saying the exact same thing. It's a much larger structural problem. It's THE structural problem. Our decision structures are not fit for purpose.

There's a fundamental failure of imagination among political leaders about the realities of governing in the 21st Century (this is true for the UK as well as the EU). Toxic information environments, malevolent state actors - these are the threats of today.

This is why:

1. Never stop writing. If you are using AI only use it as a light editor.
2. Politicians should write the first draft of all their speeches to organise their thoughts.
3. Prose is vital to democratic societies.

The official Trump security strategy – largely ignorant, self-contradictory and in places mis-spelled – is a crude threat to all European democracies, including the UK. It is an especially immediate threat to France and Emmanuel Macron. 9/

My entire problem with "counter-narratives" is that the stuff you're countering is not stable, so your narratives are outdated before they're even out the door.

At some point you realize that the prominent, powerful people you see on your screens are mostly morons who either got lucky or are saying things billionaires want to hear, and that nobody smart or competent is in charge, and we're all just collectively flailing, and it's a miracle anything works.
