Family first, understanding reality at its most fundamental second. Also sports and good food. In my day job I study the structure of brains in beings, and the structure of beings with brains.

If you meet them again, point them to the nearest ongoing dream research applying immediate reports w repeated awakening paradigms. Im sure whoever conducts them there would be interested!

03.10.2025 15:50 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Thinking about it now though, I tend to agree with you that "see" can be used for that purpose (but not unambiguously, I guess). For example, asking "What do you see?" To someone obviously hallucinating makes sense, even if they are clearly not responsive to photons from their environment 😊
03.10.2025 08:17 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Wholeheartedly agree 👍
Although I am not sure new technical terminology/jargon is the way to go. Perhaps there are other terms already in our language that directly, and unambiguously refer to the presence of visual-like phenomenology regardless of how it might have come about?
Really? Even if they are part of repeated awakening experiments and report their content immediately upon awakening? That's cool (and new to me)!
Anyways, the word "see" seems to trip people up because they know there is no reference "out there" triggering their experiences (with visual qualities).
I like using phrases like "visual qualities" or "contents comparable to seeing" when talking to people about this. Also, the comparison with Dreams is a good one imo. Most people understand the issue then; for most people dreams can have visual qualities even though they don't really "see" anything.

Im sure you do already, but perhaps also emphasize that acting selfishly harms the individual themself (not just the group) in step 3. Would love to observe this exercise in action!
How often are the students able to control themselves? Do they start communicating/strategizing?
"I spoke to the governor, she was very nice," Trump said. "But I said, 'Well wait a minute, am I watching things on television that are different from what's happening? My people tell me different.'"
Almost ... a glimmer ... "am I in an anti-reality bubble populated by sycophants?" ... and gone.
I think they are considering it in Norway. At least I (perhaps delusionally?) believe I have read something about that 🙃

After skimming it, though, i feel like i may have to write a brief commentary/response in support of "inference *from* the best explanation" as another (i think essential) pillar for making valid extrapolations in consciousness science.

I think the US would benefit from remembering the separation of church and state.
Keep religion out of government.
(Same goes for others as well ofc: middle east, Israel, Russia. It gets ugly, fast)
Of course, we cant help but being influenced by data/knowledge from the past, but still, do what you can to avoid overfitting.
Also, stick to a single model/theory at a time; all your eggs in one basket, really stick your neck out, and come up with your best possible suggestion, before testing it.
My gut feeling is that we should use as much of it as possible for the test set, and as little as possible for the training set, so to speak. I.e. build the theory/model as independently from the data as possible, and use as much of it as you can to check if the theory/model is any good.

Now that Kirk's killer seems to be caught, maybe the news could spare a moment's attention for the right wing, from the commentariat up to the GOP and president, whose immediate reaction was not mourning, but to seize the opportunity to try to incite violence against groups they hate
